Has to be a cultural thing

Interesting that the new version of Royston Comp, Carlton Community College, is in there with the worst 200 in Britain. Brand new school with brand new facilities, experienced pool of teachers, yet still the results are appalling. No-one can complain about a lack of investment, it's got to be a cultural thing, i can't find any other rational explanation. A shame that so many Barnsley people's ambitions seem to be set so low.

    My old school, Willowgarth, listed.

4 in Sheffield and 4 in Leeds worse than any in Barnsley.

Thats hardly an achievement, is it, when no doubt they are all in massively deprived inner-city areas with 50 or 60 per cent English as a second language? I know HT's first language isn't english but Barnsley hardly faces the same issues does it?

Re: Has to be a cultural thing

Farnham - Willowgarth has closed down now, but only since Xmas.

All we have here is a list, no underlying reasons. When I was with my ex and we were looking into high schools for her lad, the one he wanted to go to was Kingstone and being fairly close to home made sense. She looked at the league table and number of GCSE passes and said she didn't want him to go there. Now, I'm a firm believer that children should go to the local school, none of this sending them past 2 or 3 to one that is deemed better. I looked at the actual report for Kingstone and discovered that the reason for it's lower than average pass rate was because it's deemed a centre for children with learning difficulties, and it's these pupils that bring down the overall average. The report stated that if you discount those pupils, then the school has a higher than average pass rate. Given that her lad was very bright I said he would be in that above average grouping and so it turned out to be when he took his exams last year at Kingstone.
It's all well and good looking at a league table that just lists the pass rates, but you can get a different story entirely when you look beyond the initial statistics.

It makes pretty grim reading. If the lads and lasses were looking forward to a life down the mines, steelworks, rag trade etc then fair enough, but times have changed. Can't the majority of youngsters these days be arsed to put a bit of effort in or are they too busy texting ***** to each other 24 hours a day?

I know someone who works at that school. From the stories I've heard it's an absolute nightmare of a place. For a start it isn't even big enough to fit all the pupils in.

At least all the thickoid kids will be welcome here on Bbs. They will probably raise the intelligence on here!

I know this will help, at least I hope it does

Barnsley's education system has been this poor for a long time though there has been some improvement at Primary level.

Hardly a surprise when there are very few well paid jobs in the area

No decent jobs = better educated drifting away.

Proper investment in the area is the only way to reverse poor educational standards.

Hardly a surprise when the kids won't do any work & are rude to the staff when parents give them all they want without m much a please or thankyou, they need some manners & a better attitude & being given free things in life instead of being able to sponge off the state
