As Harry Hill approaches what will surely be his final game in charge at Oakwell, I thought I'd rate the Reds' Managers of my era out of 10. To my amazement, I can't make Hill the worst we've had - in fact the score I felt obliged to give him (considering some of the other numpties we've had) quite surprised me. I suppose it may have something to do with the fact that the entertainment value of his Chronicle column and his other public utterances goes at least a little way towards the lack of the same on the pitch during his unlikely spell in charge.

Anyway, here's hoping our Bored will give careful consideration to the next supremo - although it may be pushing it to have someone in place for Boxing Day. On a totally subjective basis, here's my ratings:

    Johnny Steele 7
    John McSeveney 3
    Jim Iley 4
    Allan Clarke 8
    Norman Hunter 8
    Bobby Collins 5
    Mel Machin 4
    Viv Anderson 6
    Danny Wilson 10
    John Hendrie 5
    Eric Winstanley 6
    Dave Bassett 5
    Nigel Spackman 0
    Glyn Hodges 0
    Steve Parkin 0
    Gudjon Thordarson 2
    Paul Hart 0
    Andy Ritchie 8
    Simon Davey 6
    Mark Robins 6
    Keith Hill 4

As I said rothred, it's all subjective, but wasn't the Liverpool/Chelsea/Wembley thing the only exciting thing to happen to us since Ritchie left?

And to be fair, SD managed to lure ADS, Hammill, Campbell-Ryce, etc, etc. Princes of players compared to Harry's League Oners in waiting?

Re Good John, in truth I can't remember much about his reign, but I can't recall the negatives that I'd attribute to Spackman or Hart.

Gudjon did a great job. Mad Mel was a very good manager too, nearly took us up. Signed some great players too.

    Orsenkaht.......very good discussion thread mate.

    It's all about opinions.

Wilson will obviously be our darling for the fact he got us the Prem dream, but Bassett did a superb job (cup runs and play-offs)......we could really do with a motivator like Bassett now?

Also not sure that Hunter was as good as Clarke, he inherited a good squad, but in fairness he did make progress.

    Good post

Also think Machin was deserves more credit, albeit the memory of Machin was boring dire football and a boring dire charcater to match (maybe this is why you score him low).

How can you give Davey a 6 but only give Bassett a 5? His side were great to watch, he got us to Wembley and almost got us promoted. And Gudjon deserves more than a 2 IMO. Bobby Collins got quite a generous score too compared to some others (Mad Mel) on a purely subjective basis.

Only minus 50 for Spackman, you're far too generous.

Bassett a 5? His side were great to watch,

really,? they were pretty overrated IMHO, he did OK and a lot better than now but not that great to watch really, we were over reliant on a few players and more than a bit fortunate for me

Bassett did a great job at BFC.............the fact he managed Wimbledon and Blades seems to taint many peoples opinons (I am not saying this is true for you).

Tactician, motivator, media skills, leader, good football "contacts", experience, etc.............really everything you have on your checklist when interviewing for a new manager.

Completely agree North Yorks Red, not to mention the ageing dross he lumbered us with on massive pay deals. Take Hignet out of that team and we were an average typical Bassett team

Doesn't Bassett have one of the top points ratio's in the clubs history? If winning games isn't great to watch I don't know what is.

I just can't get past the long term consequences of his short termism.

Expand? I kind of know what you are saying but don't think that overshadows what he almost achieved. Particularly as the team was broken up after Wembley.
