Anyone know how many people were employed by the pits in Barnsley before they closed down or know where I could find information like that out? Or any other information on the mining industry in Barnsley, doing a research proposal for university and could do with some background information. Thanks
Fekkin lazy students.... I thought you were supposed to do your own studies? The younger generation these days.... Tut tut Hope this helps
That's great that, like I said it's just a proposal but in my introduction I want to put some facts in about the industry to show why I'm doing it. Thanks to those above too, any more links appreciated
1981 Census should have information on Mining Industry sector - http://casweb.mimas.ac.uk If you need any help just let me know, I wrote that site ( a long time ago) and still work on census support for academics.
Some figures for you - From 1981 Census Zone ID, Zone Name, Total Pop, Males, Males, Economically Active, Work in Energy Sector (10% sample) 05CC, BARNSLEY, 222371, 109322, 83937, 1913 So, a rough estimation bearing in mind the Energy Sector are a 10% sample (so it is possible that in the 90% no one works in mining) and that Energy Sector could mean they work in Hydroelectrics, Electrical Power Production or Offshore Oil - is that around 20,000 men worked in mining in 1981 who were Barnsley residents. That is out of population of 83k economically active males (men of working age and physically/mentally able). Sorry about formatting. Hope this helps.
Thanks for that mate, shame this sites been down for the last few years. Proposal got to be in today, but I will keep the links for if I do it in a dissertation in a couple of years time. Thanks again.
