Barnsley director Don Rowing has revealed the club have expressed an interest in signing Sheffield Wednesday striker Chris O’Grady.

But as yet the Reds have not made a firm offer for the Owls hitman who impressed on loan at Oakwell last season.

O’Grady is believed to be surplus to requirements at Hillsborough despite having a year left on his current contract with the Championship club.

And The Star understands the 27-year-old, who scored six goals in 16 appearances for the Reds last term - which included three goals in the last four games of the season to help the club avoid relegation - is keen to make a permanent switch to Oakwell.

“There’s been an interest in Chris O’Grady but we’ve not made any official bid for him,” Rowing told The Star.

“He did very well for us last season and scored some important goals, but I know David Flitcroft is looking at a lot of players.

“And we still have to sort a few contracts out for next season, which we’re in the process of doing.”

The Reds have been linked with a move for former loan striker Michael Chopra, who scored 17 goals in 39 appearances for the club between 2004-2005.

And the club have also been linked with a move for former forward Danny Haynes, released by Charlton Athletic at the end of last season.

But Rowing told The Star that the club have not expressed any interest in either player.

“Not to my knowledge, but I’m sure we’ll be linked with a lot of players from now until the start of the new season,” Rowing revealed.

Meanwhile, Reds defender Tom Kennedy - who is expected to pen a new two-year deal with the club - has urged the club to sign O’Grady for next season.

“He’s [Chris] is a man mountain, he’s a cross between a rock and a gentle giant,” Kennedy told The Star.

“It would be great to have him up front next season.”

The Reds sealed their survival on the last day opf the season at Huddersfield.

    Well aye.

Think you've got to be daft to say we're not interested.

    I must admit

I haven't heard any transfer gossip worthy of note so far. There's been a few suggestions of players who folk would like to see coming to the club, but nothing more than that. Perhaps the pace of gossip may pick up next month.

It's looks like it's going to rain at Headingley. Sky have worked this out using the fact that it is raining in Barnsley, and Barnsley is East of Leeds.

Why not is my first thought

We have released Harewood - so we need a replacement striker,
We know O Grady would fit in well here
We know he wants to come
We know the Fowls dont want him
We should have a bit of cash from the Butterfield Davies and Stones transfers.

I am baffled as to why we havent made any offer at all - are we waiting until someone else nips in.
