Last night, I watched a video of the highlights of this cup match in 1993 (I think). It was a terrible night with high winds and rain. Barnsley's football was superb. No hoofing into the wind, all played on the deck. Every member of the team passed the ball well, and the forwards, Liddell, Payton and Rammell(when he came on) knoew what they were doing. Arsenal were top of the Premier, we were in 9th slot in the First Division. Looking at the last three seasons, it is of little surprise that we are fighting yet again against relegation. I do not believe, with the exception of Muller, that any of the current crop could have taken the positions of Steve Davis, Shezza, Bullock, Eaden & Co. in that team.

    Is this the one

where one of their players (was it Jensen?) had never scored for them, he was one on one with the keeper and slotted it past him from the edge of the area, wheeled away in celebration and the ball got stuck in the mud in the 6 yard box and we cleared it and play continued.....he was giving the linesman some stick thinking a goal had been disallowed!

    That was funny!

I remember it well. rained cats & Dogs all night. Berkamp was playing but Keown score the winning goal with a great looping header.

I sat in the West stand in the open air, bought a plastic bag for protection, but still got soaked to the skin. Vowed never again and have since made sure of a Season ticket out of the rain, thankfully.

Is that the game where our fans gave Paul Merson loads of stick, because it'd just come out in the press about his addictions?

Paul Merton - hooked on silent comedy. Tragic really, a promising career spoiled by a poisonous addiction.

Was that the game where Ian Wright was subjected to 'monkey chants'?

    Think it was.

Nicky Eaden's penalty is still rising!

It was later than 1993 because I didn't start going regularly until the end of '94.

Wright had taken a great deal of racist abuse that night. Started in the warm up and he took it all game long. He'd even had a word with the guys in question in a "come on, give it a rest - please" sort of way. Quite right to rub it in when they went 3 up. I think the club even issued an apology to him, such was the scale of it. As usual the stewards heard every word - did **** all.
Remember looking over to the away end - uncovered as it was then - and thinking how soaked they must have been. Having said that i was in the open in the west stand but at least i had some wind protection!

Just goes to show how time plays tricks - I could've sworn it was Eaden!

Then again, I always thought they looked the same!

It was either 1995 or 1996...

saw a picture once of a barnsley player, maybe andy rammell, battling with martin Keown, in that kit with the stripey arms, and i remeber that kit well as it was the first one i ever got, definatly 1995/1996 season.

RE: It was either 1995 or 1996...

It was. I remember queuing for a ticket and getting to the front only to realise I'd forgotten my centenary card. Never mind, I thought. It's only a tatty out of date card that doesn't prove I'm still a member. I've got loads of ID with me and know my membership number. You can guess what happened. I was sent away to get the useless card. This despite them having a book on the counter with all the up to date memberships in it and me having a fist full of ID - VISA card, Minibank Card, Driver's Licence - the lot!
