how the ref aint interested at all and just leaves the player practically unconscious in the area and the game just goes on around em lol
I remember a large portion of Burnley fans rushing the gates to get out before final whistle and half housebricks being thrown over wall towards away end of West Stand that day .
Extremely warm day and the first time that season we'd seen Glavin & Banks together. There were glimpses of a weakened defence when we replaced Ian Evans with Don Souter, as well as us missing Trevor Aylott up front. Still brings back memories of just what a wonderful player Ronnie Glavin was. On a personal note, my friend & I flew to Portugal on the Monday.
Another great memory from the KT archive. I hope all under 40s on here watch these videos because they weren't lucky enough to see Oakwell like this. Almost full terraces around three sides of the ground with no yawning, empty sections of seats. Exciting football with Ronnie in full flow (even scored a rare headed goal!). The likes of MIck McCarthy and Derrick Parker playing at their peak. A big, strong goalkeeper in Bobby Horn who could actually kick a ball the length of the pitch. Comfortably beating the likes of Burnley on a regular basis, despite them having current or ex internationals in their side. Yes, it was a good time to be a Barnsley fan during those early years of the 1980s. If only that momentum hadn't stalled
I only vaguely remember the game, I'd just turned 8 years old at the end of August, but remember the Glavin goal like it was yesterday. There's something about goals on the counter attack that I love, supporters who've only watched us since the mid nineties can appreciate the similarities between Glavin and Hignett from this footage. I do, however, have brilliant memories of the following home game a fortnight later. One of our greatest fightback victories - "that game" v Fulham when we were 3-0 down after 7 minutes. Even allowing for age, I can still remember how positive the support was, you still felt we'd get something from the game. And when Banks scored towards half time, it was game on.
I must have been there but dont really remember it too well. Oh the happy days of a side that knew how to play the final ball and cross. Slightly flattered with the 3-0 scoreline Burnley should have had a pen and one world class save from Horn but we could have had more as well - rare header from the King
Can I just place on record, again, my appreciation for the time and skill of your good self in producing & posting these videos? Thank you, old mate.
Enjoyed this, thanks. Always great to see The King in action. Also, Alan Birch was a really good player who we don’t seem to mention as much as some of the others. Commentary from John Helm - the only Yorkshire Television commentator who ever had any time for us.
Great video. Always good to see the old Oakwell. Nice to see King Ronnie’s two goals. Galvin going one on one with the keeper was a bit like taking a penalty .....from 6 yards......with no goalkeeper! In the net every time. interesting line in shorts there I thought. Looked as if they had been borrowed from the Argentina World Cup winning team. (You have to be ‘of a certain age‘ to understand.)
RIGHT..how much were Albert Hirsts pork pies that day and what position were you in the queue at half time ?
How times have changed. Fences round the ground No one wearing a football shirt Only one substitute No names on the back of shirts Picking up the ball from a back pass Everyone stood up Trainers rather than physios Head injuries totally ignored Also how did Bobby Horn not give away a penalty for that deliberate last ditch foul? He would have had a straight red in this era.
I had a lettuce leaf for dinner, before going to the match. Then, afterwards, I had another for my tea, before an evening of contemplation and the sipping of mineral water. Obviously.
