I'll miss tomorrow's game as I'm on holiday. Bad planning but it gives the mind time to think back to years gone by watching BFC.
Also I'm not big on nostalgia, but for those who are, I was at the above match.

For them that are interested, it was a cold, snowy winters night. The wind was was howling and the fans were roaring. The sky was black and tension and anticipation filled the air. Expectation was high and optimism was rife. We had a team full of journeymen. They had a side packed full of internationals, including Gordon West ( born and bred in Darfield) in goal, Brian Labone at centre half, Ray Wilson ( from Huddersfield - went on to play left back for England in the 66 World Cup winning team) Alec Young, Fred Pickering etc. We were preparing for Battling Barnsley to take us all on a run to Wembley.

Result? We lost 0-3 and were played off the park. Taught me how to cope with disappointment at an early age.

Anyone else out there with their memory still intact who might have been there? It was one of my earliest memories of going down to oakwell and will live with me forever.
My old man (rip) has a lot to answer for for taking me down in the first place but as we all know, watching our team brings as much pleasure as it does grief. I still feel like that 7 year old kid even now when I'm watching BFC.

Shout extra loud tmrw. We can win it. Whilst not everyone on here would agree with me, I believe this lad (LJ) has assembled a promising squad who need time to grow into and understand each other's game. At times this season we have produced purposeful passages of play with positive movement and energy. The potential is there.

    COYR!!!!!!

Yes, I was there. I thought it might be called off as the pitch was covered in snow and the lines had had to be scraped out and done in blue. Also played with an orange ball so it could be seen. I too had hoped for a win and although I was disappointed to be stuffed 3-0, I'd already had my flood of tears several years earlier when we were knocked out in extra time by Leicester. I really thought that season after beating Luton (then a good side) at Oakwell 1-0 and getting a 0-0 draw at Leicester that we might do it. One day we will. Or so I continue to hope!

I was there and remember it well. I was a young kid and went with mi Dad. We still go together although he's 90 now. I remember there being a very special atmosphere. Everton from memory won the League that season and were a great side. The fans favourite was Alec Young, a blond, curly haired, Scottish centre forward. A bit like Ian St John, the fans favourite across Stanley Park, he was not a big imposed old fashioned centre forward but smaller and really quick. I remember the fans continually sang his name. I don't remember if he scored but wouldn't be surprised if he did. As an 8 year old boy Ray Wilson was one of my favourite player. He also stood bolt upright looking elegant and seemed to have so much time on the ball. To this day I don't think England has produced a better LB, including Ashley Cole.

That's a lovely post Aylott. Fantastic to hear you're still going down and taking your dad. Hearing that totally touches a part of me and brings a tear to my eyes as I think of all the happy times my dad and I had watching the Reds. The best bonding experience. Give your old man a hug from me.
Yes Alec Young . A canny player.
I also agree with you about Wilson. Superb and elegant. Very understated but precise and a good tackler. Retired and became a funeral director! These days he wouldn't have had to work again. It's a cliche but how times have changed.
    Shout loud tmrw!!!!!

Great post 55&c, interesting read. Said it before but I like your posts, you should do more.

Nostalgia though, not what it used to be.

Yes I was there. It was cold. We didn't play another home game until the middle of March because of the weather. We had proper snow in those days. That was some Everton team. They went on to win the League Division One Championship.
The following season we lost at home 4 nil to Manchester United in the fifth round

    Cracking post.

Way before my time (well only just actually) but here are a few snaps from the game. The snow on the pitch was "rolled" down and the lines repainted in blue.

Oi!! Have you got my scrapbook there? I have those pics as well, and a report and pen pictures of all the players. Good coverage by the Chronicle.

I started keeping scrapbooks a couple of seasons before this and went on for a LONG time. Still have them all. Those, plus my programme collection, make quite a big problem to lug around when you have moved as much as I have in the last 45 years. When I was in Germany they lived in my loft back home and I prayed that our tenants wouldn't go up there and, just for a laugh, mess about with them. They didn't!

Remember it well. The famous winter of 63! Third Round FA Cup ties were postponed so many times it's a wonder they managed to cram all the games in before final day. Days like this didn't come around too often and, of course, over thirty thousand turned out for this huge cup tie.

Can't see there being more than a third of that tomorrow, but we can't do anything about that. Too much Sky, too much wall to wall football on other channels as well. Seeing a "big name" come to Oakwell doesn't have the same meaning any more. Shame that.
