A short clip I've extracted from a documentary. I believe the game is V Mansfield Town April 8th 1969.
I was at the Mansfield game and don't believe the one in 1969 is the game in the film. For a start, I'm of the opinion the 1969 game was played at night. Not only that, but I seem to remember Mansfield playing in an all blue kit with amber trimmings. I could well be wrong (probably am), but those are my recollections of that particular match in 1969.
I thought that, too, but have greater memory of football matters than social ones. Greater, but not particularly good.
I was at that game - in part. Sorry to admit this, but it must have been the Easter weekend and I had driven three/four friends from Barugh Green to Castleton for the day. We got back too late for the kick off, but snuck in after half time. We didn't see the goals and the game was played in the evening under lights. I recall someone telling me that Loyden ended his lean spell without a goal by driving the ball in, just clipping the underside of the crossbar as it entered the net. I don't think that the game being shown was the 1969 Mansfield game, therefore. We seemed to play Mansfield a fair few times towards the end of the season. I can recall Frank Sharp's stunning winner on April 10th 1971 and David Booth's last-minute equaliser on 28th March 1970. I can't recognise any players from the slip, so it's hard to tell, but Mansfield usually wore their gold shirts at Oakwell, so it probably is them. Don't know which game, though.
Loyden's goal was a header at the Ponty End from a left wing cross. I agree with your comments regarding Mansfield normally playing in the strip seen in the film.
There were only a handful present that night. Eric, Charlie, Bob, Arthur, Billy, Jim, Joe, Albert & Freddie.
The plot thickens! To be fair I've been told the date etc but I keep forgetting. That date sticks out so I attached it to the film. Let's see if we can solve it.
May I just take this opportunity, mate, to thank you for all the videos you've posted. They've certainly brightened me up and the nostalgia overload they provide is wonderful. Thank you for providing me with the opportunity to regress to a happier time. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
