It doesnt matter who we sign, players are constantly looking to play for clubs with bigger fan bases, higher wages, more succesful ETC. (Just a few factors)
Brian Howard, Jamie Ward and Kevin Phillips have all proved this on their own accord.

This season hasnt been nothing to gloat about and me too like many other fans have been bemused to some of Daveys tactical decisions and signings. The team should have done alot better than they did.

People complaining about all these foreigners Davey has brought in but what Good British players can we actually attract who are proven at championship level to score 15+ goals a season who dont want high wages (£20,000 a year) ETC. Even if we did find a player who could score 15+ goals a season he would soon enough realise he was too good for us and he would soon demand high wages (something we dont do) or hes off, then were back where we started. This has happened often enough in the past.

To be successful in the championship (I mean successful in achieving the play off's or automatic) you need money. Teams like Birmingham who have players such as Jerome, Bowyer, Bent, Johnson and Carsley almost certainly earn £20,000+ a year. Wolves with players like Harewood, Ebanks blake, Kightly, Keogh all again earn in the region of £20,000. We cant afford to do this and this is why we wont taste success in this division.
Im not saying PC hasnt put the money into BFC as i think hes done great for the club however he clearly doesnt have enough money.

The fans who think this team and club is capable of any kind of promotion effort are barmy, theres nothing wrong with AMBITION but REALISM is a much stronger word.

You keep banging on about £20,000 a year

    I'm on more than that.

As all Barnsley players are... which kind of causes your post to lose any credibility it may have had.

£20,000 a week you mean... on what basis are the likes of Kightly and Ebanks-Blake on £20,000 a week?

One signed from Plymouth and one from Grays Athletic? Then Keogh from Scnuthorpe.

    You're assuming it's because they're good players.

    You have no facts whatsoever.

I know the point you're making, but you'll find Hull, Stoke, Preston, Burnley and Swansea (who almost made play offs) spent little more, if any, than we have in transfer fees, and some of them I would imagine on wages.

think this post is daft Scott. I agree that we probably don't have the cash to be a leading contender in the division, but we certainly do not need to struggle. With a decent man manager and a few 'lucky' decent signings a club like Barnsley can easily find itself pushing for a playoff place. I honestly do not think that this is pie in the sky.

    You are indeed...

And you failed to answer any of my points.

I'd say based on previous performance and club that Hume would command a higher wage than some of the Wolves players you're on about.

We could have been easily mid-table last season

If we had played 4-4-2 all season, scored our penalties and if someone had told us that the final whistle does not blow after 80 minutes

    Noooooooo !!!!!

I'm sure that folks on here have been to Blackburn back in the Simon Garner era, when the crowds were 6,000 and 1,000 of those were Reds.
....and to Wigan on a Tuesday night with less than 2,000 folks in the ground ... and Fulham. Look where they are now.... Yes they have financial backing, but other teams have proved consistently that it is possible to succeed in this division without massive outlay. Stoke, Hull, last year.

It's staying up that's the harder task.

What makes teams like Preston, Burnley any more likely to succeed in this division? They have no better support or structure than us.

Every dog has its day. Except Rochdale.

    RE: Noooooooo !!!!!

Don't agree with his post but there is an underlying problem witn Barnsley FC at the moment. Since we were relegated from Div 1 we've had a reputation as an unglamourous club and 3 consecutive relegation dog fights have done nothing to change that.

In order to attract better players we need to improve season on season and we won't do that without decent players. Best way I can see to remedy this sharpish is by appointing the type of manager good players wanna play for. A higher profile appointment than we're used to for example, someone with ambition.

Not saying Preston or Burnley have appointed high profile managers don't get me wrong, but they appointed very good managers with ambitions to take their clubs to a higher level. I've never thought Simon Davey to be that type of manager, don't think I ever will but I want to be proved wrong.

You are right in some respects as we cannot compete with the wages of some of the top players on 20k a week through out the squad. It would financial suicide. however, we should be in a realistic area to compete for players both wages and ambition wise with a good 60% of the clubs in the championship and i expect our hand to strengthen in the next few seasons as well due to the financial constraints other clubs are putting themself under to reach the promised land, Cardiff, SWFC, Cov,Plymouth, West Brom, Newcastle to name but a few are struggling financially. infact if Newcastle went down it would be with the largest bang known to the football league. Their wage bill is about 60m.
