Leaving circumstance aside for a moment and concentrating solely on ability, the players named on Barnsley`s bench on Monday night said a lot about how far we`ve come in such a short space of time. Namely, since Mark Robins came in as boss. The Barnsley bench to face Sheffield United on Monday read like this: Preece, Hume, Gray. A, Thompson, Campbell-Ryce, Hassell, Hallfredsson. For a start, three of those players are currently in the national team`s squads, so they have that degree of ability at least. Andy Gray has looked sharp when he`s played for us and but for some excellent performances by Bogdanovic and Macken, would be starting games for us. Hassell has proved his worth time and time again, picking up the Player of the Year award last year. Furthermore, since Robins` arrival, there`s been much more competition for places and results have picked up so much so that we`ve climbed nine places in eleven games. Things are obviously looking up and so should we be. PLAY OFF'S BY MAY
That was my immediate thought as soon as I saw the bench on Monday - strength in depth that we could only have dreamed of not long ago. Watched the match with my mate who supports Liverpool, he was creaming himself over Boggy and Anderson.
