If there's a more ridiculous law than not allowing asylum seekers to work, I don't know what it is.

"Right fella, you're over here applying for asylum, it's going to take a few months, so we're going to provide you with housing and state benefits."

"Nah mate, I wanna work, pay me own way, have a bit of brass for mesen at end o' week." (This particular asylum seeker is from Donny)

"Sorry mate, not allowed, you've got to go on benefits."

"But I'm fit 'n' healthy and I wanna work. I'll do owt."

"Nope. It's the law that you have to go on benefits."

    "WTF?"

Aye, but no refugees want to work. They're all on the scrounge.

Anybody with a bit of sense knows that's ballacks. While there might be a very small percentage for whom that applies, the vast majority come here to better themselves. They don't want to come to a cold country and be poor. They want to be rich. That's what western countries offer, a chance to be rich. It'll not happen for the majority like, but they definitely want to work. You don't get dole dwellers travelling thousands of miles, risking life and limb in an attempt to get to another country. You get people with some get up and go, with a bit of summat about them. They've come for a better life and that doesn't mean being on the dole.

Not saying we should welcome these people with open arms, that's a different debate, but they've not come here to scrounge, they want what we've got: a house, a car, food on the table and a decent life.

I know you were joking btw.

Re: you must not have seen the Ghetto's in the inner cities

Are these all people who have travelled here from another country?

There's also a big difference between not wanting a job and being unable to get one due to being here illegally or not having the necessary education/training due to coming from another country or the general lack of opportunities in the jobs market.

Coming here wanting to better yourself and actually being able to do it are two different things. People come here thinking it's a land of opportunity, and to a certain extent it is, compared to where they've come from, but we have plenty of problems of our own that we're all too aware of. Finding suitable employment for people born here with good education, training and experience is difficult enough in the current market, imagine how difficult it is for someone who arrives here with nothing, only a slight grasp of the language and no education to speak of because their country has been ravaged by war.

I'm not saying you should feel sorry for these people or that our country should give them a home, just that their lives are very hard.
