Those of you of a similar age (or older!) to me will remember fixtures v Barrow in the late 60s prior to them failing to gain re-election at the end of the 71-72 season. Congratulations to them on their promotion back to the FL after 48 years today. Sentimental nonsense I know but I like it when clubs regain their place in the league.
Would love to get them in one of the cup competitions. A ground I’ve never been to. Carlisle might have a derby game for once.
I remember after a game a group of skinheads chasing a fat Barrow fan into the bus station where he tried to take refuge on the nearest bus, only for the driver to close the doors just in front of him. A bloke then confronted said driver and kept saying over and over "You B*****d" funny as f**k when you're a nipper
Seem to remember a 5-1 away win over Barrow in the old 4th Division. Unheard of for Barnsley to bang 5 in away from home back then - we usually went through the season with either zero or 1 away win.
I had the dubious pleasure of living in Barrow for 6 months in 1998. Travelled regularly from there for games in the premier season went to holker street a few times on a Tuesday night however too It was a similar town to Barnsley I thought, industrial, working class, a little rough around the edges but with beautiful countryside on its doorstep
Looked on Google maps, they're in the same county but right at opposite ends - a derby that's 80 miles away poor buggers
Proper back down to earth day after the euphoria of promotion from the Fourth Division. A lovely August afternoon spoiled by a much better team (on the day at least). I was there.
just imagine if the riches that smother the premier league were distributed more evenly and fairly, we could see teams like barrow etc climbing the ladder.. just imagine how interesting football would become
Mi owd mate from "Icum" played with Barrow in the 60's Roy McCarthy transferred from Barnsley after only playing one game.
Brilliant news, weve now got two league clubs in Cumbria, Barrow was my firs away day in 1969, we won 1-0......their ground hasn't changed much since either, be great to get them in a cup.......also gives Morecambe a proper league rival
