...as an abject failure saying we are now isolated and have no influence. Since when did we have any influence in the Eurozone since we are not, and never have been, part of it? Are th Beeb out of touch with public opinion?

Think it's the best thing we could have done, to join in would have conceeded control of our own economy

    Re: Did they mention

Just like the anti-European mob forget to mention what benefits we get back. Farming subsidies, europen wide grants etc. Oh and the freedom of movement we all enjoy etc.

So it doesn't 'cost' us 50 million.

That's because it is. Whether you like it or not, if the European economy goes even more tits up then we are knackered. Just because we aren't in the Euro won't matter.
Now, what ever happens will do so without us having any influence on it. We have always been able to bargain and persuade no matter which government was in power. Cameron has just changed that. Not a point that is even in dispute.

P.S. I thought this quote sums it up:

" If you are not at the table then you are on the menu"

    Re: Oh Dear....

Actually we are net contributors and have put far more into it than have got out .

Also not all the contributors are 'kids' as you put it and these , 'experts', are modern day journalists who, rather than investigate properly, tend to rely on 'handouts' and rumour mills rather than verify facts. Dragging Lib-Dem MEP after Lib-Dem MEP and numerous EU country MEPS and ex PMs is hardly a balanced view especially when they are asked "Did David Cameron do the right thing?" Freedom of movement has absolutely nothing to do do with the Eurozone and current financial difficulties. We are NOT excluding ourselves from the EU.

Are you one of these people who believe All Public sector Pension funds are unsustainable and all PS workers have 'Gold Plated Pensions paid for by the taxpayer??

Summing up - the following analogy also applies...

...better to be on the beach watching the ship sink than being trapped on the bridge. Or.... better to be on the outside of the locked front door in a burning building

    PS....

...a few days ago Cameron was being criticised for poking his nose in when we are not even in the Eurozone. Now they want him to comply with Merkozy's grand plan and he won't he is being painted as the villain.

Don't forget, the proposals were never even presented to all members, Merkel rejected them outright. Some 'Democracy!'

What would you have done? Signed away sovereignty?

    Re: Oh Dear....

Absolutely. That's why I went and picketed with Unison members when I'm a private sector worker with no pension provisions.

And isn't Robert Peston one of the most respected commentators around? But yeah, he must be talking ****.

I'm not gonna argue about it cos I don't know enough about it, and neither do you. But it's not as black and white as you want to make it out to be.

    Re: PS....

what gets me is we spent years trying to get into europe being vetoed time and time again by Degaulle and then when we do get in we don't want to go along with proposals.
no wonder all the other countries havn't got time for us we're a waste of time. probably better off sticking with the american alliance whereby we let their companies come in and asset strip ours while all the time their president kisses the arse of the euro zone cos he thinks thats where the real politicans are

    Re: Oh Dear....

Never said it was black and white. But the fact is that the camps are divided whether Camerons stance is good or bad (and not always on party political lines) I also studied economics and, whilst I may not be a respected commentator, have had the benefit of viewing the train wreck from a distance having, like many people, seen it coming for a long time. The problem with economists is they get wrapped up in details and overlook the obvious.
A good example is govt advisers pushing PFIs. How can that work when you introduce another cost element i.e. 'profit'? Ooh they never thought of that and now all thesee initiatives like care homes etc are failing as will these Free schools when people 'lose interest' and find how hard it actually is to run a school. An example is PTAs where an enthusiastic group start out and when their kids leave try to hand over to the next group and more often as not it all goes 'tits-up'

    Re: Oh Dear....

You were trying to make out it was black and white, only putting forward what you wanted fowk to know.

I dint study economics cos what you've just wrote sounds unbelievably boring - but to sum up, keep profit out of the public sector, yeah?

And I've no reason to think the BBC would portray owt in a way they dint think was accurate. When Boris Johnson sez something is good, it's usually ballacks.

    Re: Oh Dear....

the sceptics always play on and enhance what prejudices the people of the uk have harboured about the rest of europe so in that respect we'll never get a real view on europe. as both camps will pervert reasons to or not to keep in europe.
there's always controversy on what euro actually does for us but imo it stops our govt's of all colours negecting parts of our country that they don't want to help .
as far as getting less than we put in the whole point of the eec is to bring less well off countries in line.

    Re: Oh Dear....

It's definitely not a mutual aid society, that could exist without the Euro, the idea is for a single country controlled from Brussels and Frankfurt, and the best way to do it is to control a nations currency, the parties
who are most in favour are the European political elite who see the EU as the best career move imaginable, whenever the people have been asked the answer is No.....the German people would never have forsaken the Deutschmark...so no referendum, this is a major treaty change but none of the original members will allow their own people a direct say,the only
people who worry them are their own citizens.

Not a huge fan of some aspects of the EU BUT

That massive hole that was Manvers got regenerated by money by Europe, if we'd left it to the Tories we'd still be looking at a huge mercury slag heap, just saying like. Lets not pretend that South Yorks gained any investment from the Conservatives, it all came from Europe, they may not be the best jobs in the world, but if left to the Tories there'd be absolutely jack all jobs.

    However, it's worth remembering

... that when we joined Europe we joined an "economic" community of ten nations, all striving for better trading opportunities with each other and abroad.

When the nation voted to stay in Europe in the historic national referendum of 1975, we all thought we were simply approving that arrangement.

Never in our wildest dreams did we ever realise the inefficient, expensive, wasteful, freedom curtailing monster it would become.

    That is what irks people.
