davor suker I was sat amongst the croatian fans behind the goal, absolutely fantastic atmosphere, probably the best non barnsley match I've been to.
The goal was a touch of class

Dont agree Its a wonderful goal but nevertheless a speculative snap shot. I like to give more credit to well worked goals or to those where players have to control the ball before scoring or where players have to think before shooting / picking their target..i.e. Poborski / sukers chip's or Gazza's control and shoot or Maniche's pinpoint curler.
I think quite a few of those goals were fortunate ie they relied on keepers and defenders making mistakes rather than purely on the attacking team working it well. A bit like ginola against us. Take poborsky for example, what on earth was the keeper doing so far out of his net? If he had been properly positioned then that goal would never have happened, same with suker's, keeper way out of position and running back towards his net, the holland freekick, keeper stepped the wrong way, a good keeper would have kept it out, especially from his starting position.
Agreed Prime example of a keeper attempting a "wonder save" for the cameras only to instead sacrifice a goal. He could and should have saved it.
RE: Dont agree Speculative snap shot? I wouldn't describe it as that unless every goal is speculative. He did what he meant to do by pure skill and certainly thought about it!.
I agree with you If you look up Van Basten on Youtube you see just how sensational he was for Milan. His finishing was on another level to anyone before or since, he could intend to do things that we couldn't see as even being possible. You look at the quality of the finishing and it is really like he had some extra sensory awareness of where he was in relation to the goal, the keeper, defenders... his timing was immaculate, never wasted a touch, his technique was sublime. He intended every split second of that goal against Russia. He was untouchable.
If the goal had been scored by an unknown player it would be just another good goal, largely forgotten. I've seen better at Oakwell. Barnards strike for instance is as good if not better.
RE: If the goal had been scored by an unknown player Great goal by Barnard obviously. Best ever at Oakwell was Ian Banks vs Cardiff in league cup years ago. Just have to agree to disagree. Van Basten will stay my number one - it was the angle, unexpectedness, power, control and precision that did it for me!!
