Absolutely marvellous. And such a novelty! Not too pretty again tonight, but so, so pleased that we've put to bed a side relatively comfortably who we ought to have beat. A feature of VI's team seems to be that we get the results we should, and have a decent crack at those we shouldn't. About as much as we could expect as Reds fans. Both early goals were extremely well worked, well deserved, and a reflection of the football we play. I've criticised the over-directness of the team, and again today I felt that we made it harder than it needed to be by playing too direct. After scoring two good goals, I felt if we'd had a bit more composure on the ball we may have scored more, or at least limited the opposition chances if we'd managed possession better. After Rovrum grew into the game 2nd half, I cried out for the boss to change the system (AS IF!!) and bring on Palmer for one of the forwards. He didn't, he did like for like as he always does, and from 71st to 96th minute I felt I knew better, like a proper fan. But we defended superbly, he was right, and we won AGAIN. In this case, the means certainly justify the ends. After posting a very similar review weeks ago, I have the same conclusion. I hope the board are ready to back the boss with the signings he needs to make this style even more effective, and to give him some options for plans B and C. If they do, we might just be onto something to stabilise us properly as a mid-table Championship side, which is huge, huge progress.
Is that really how the post came across? Good grief no. But we're on a good run, and were playing the side 4th bottom who had well documented problems that affected their preparation. It was a game we ought to have won, and so often we lose those. I'm just really happy we won it.
