He'd be a fool to take the poisoned chalice. There will be no improvement in the club until the owner sells up.
I couldn't understand the logic of employing McClaren in the first place, been fired so many times, never proved himself above a very average Middlesbrough side, one of the worst England managers ever next to Sven. Money down the drain for Newcastle.
Why they gave it to McClaren in the first place is beyond me. The ownership of that club is an absolute shambles and I hope they are relegated.
Sven was the worst England manager of recent years. He wasted what is still the best group of players assembled on the international scene and got us to the quarter finals. Sheer and utter failure. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Jesus, thinking about it we had G Nev, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole in their prime at the back, a midfield of Becks, Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard and a young and hungry Rooney and Michael Owen up top ... Sven failed horrendously
Got to agree. I've never bought into the Sven myth. He's got to be one of the most over rated managers of all time. And how much were we paying him ffs.
Never rated McLaren, a but of a buffoon who got lucky a bit. Nice bloke. Bad hair & skin. Would have been better as Darth Vader. Their best chance of staying up is Pearson, much as I hate the lovely person, but they won't appoint him. The other 3 are not fire fighters. Warnock is gonna keep Rotherham up, & Big Sam may well keep Sunderland up too. Villa, Norwich & Newcastle down is my bet.
You mean the average Middlesbrough side that under McLaren had its highest ever Premiership finish, won its only ever domestic cup final and got to the UEFA Cup final, all during the best period in its history?
Doesn't matter who they give the job to because the clubs rotten. I'm no fan of McClaren but it's a horrible job for any manager. Most of the don't want to be there & are only there because they pay more than the teams they've come from in France & Holland. The captains been wanting to leave for 2 years too.
McLaren had pretty much all of that too, one or two aside, and didn't even get to the tournament. Quarter finals would be quite nice compared to failure to qualify. Good coach average manager they say - he's had some success though. He did very well at boro, but was awful with England. He did fantastically first time at twente, was a bit carp at wolfsburg, then did nowt at forest. He did next to nothing in his second spell at twente, then did ok (ish) at Derby - until Newcastle tapped him up (but only for the following season) and fecked the end of their season up, so he ended up sacked, and he's been poor at Newcastle - though im not sure anyone could succeed in the same circumstances. Mixed bag. Newcastle is no club to judge any manager though.
Every England manager since Venables has been a failure. McClaren being just below Sven at the head of that list. Thats the reason we never win owt, not because we havent got the players but because a bunch of middle aged business men at the FA continually appoint completely inept managers. Who, that would have taken the job, would have won us anything in your opinion? Genuinely intrigued. I just don't think the English players are good enough in an international setting.
I don't want to defend McClaren because I don't rate him but in that Euro 2008 qualifying group we came up & against & went out to Russia & Croatia who both had quality sides in that tournament & went to the last 8. I don't think we've had a tougher qualifying group in my lifetime. Arshavin was almost unplayable around that time. He dragged Zenit to the UEFA Cup & was top drawer for Russia.
Don't buy that. Yes they both had good sides - but look at the players we had at our disposal, better squads than both, many of the England players playing regularly for teams who got to the latter stages of the champions league every season at that point. Plastic pitch in Moscow aside, we should have qualified, perhaps without losing a game, though like I say there were circumstances around Russia away which made it a lottery. Arshavin wasn't too unplayable in the home game at Wembley. Was it 3-0? Trouble was mclaren couldn't string two performances together. Without hugely different squads for either country, in qualifying for the very next tournament, we absolutely destroyed Croatia home and away. Capello was hardly Alf Ramsey or Bobby Robson himself but he negotiated them without much trouble. Interestingly Scott Carson played neither game... The group we had for Euro 08 qualification was sticky, but no worse than the one which followed for 2010 with Croatia again and Ukraine. The latter we won at a canter, only losing in the Ukraine having had the keeper sent off, winning all the rest. In the former, we ended up with the same number of points as Israel, having failed to beat them away, and also not beating Macedonia at home, only managing to beat them one nil away, and losing twice to Croatia and away to Russia. No defence of that for me. Not good enough. Don't care how good Russia and Croatia were, (we beat Russia 3-0 at home, they weren't that great), if you fail to beat Macedonia and Israel, and get no more points than Israel, then there is an issue.
Which manager wouldnt want the England job? Its quite common knowledge both Mourinho and Guardiola have declared their interest in the past, which says it all. But talking about who would have won something is a different discussion than whether or not the actual inhabitants failed but anybody with in their prime John Terry's, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole and Wayne Rooney among others really should be getting to the final of competitions, minimum.
