On a personal note U2. But. even though not a fan. Has to be the Beatles as most popular. Best. is again. subjective.
Was told in my relative youth that U2 were the ultimate live band and got cajoled into a day at Elland Road in the late 80’s to see them. Don’t think it was just my prejudice but the crowd were as flat as the proverbial posters blast and I was left thinking the support acts were better value for money.
All about opinions really as it’s very subjective, however for pure consistency & groundbreaking stuff it has to be The Beatles, even though I’m not a fan. Seen as this thread will turn into folk naming random bands from different Genres & sub genres, I’ll add Fleetwood Mac into the mix
Difficult one ,could be Deep Purple , Skynyrd, Saxon ,Thin Lizzy ,UFO , Budgie but it’s probably The Tubes
Seen em 4 times. Venue and vantage point is important. Was at the front .( City of Manchester stadium. Etihad probably the best of the 4. ) But i need to add. I did enjoy The Pretenders at Bell end rd. that day. n'all.
Great venue. Only seen one bad un. Gloria Estafan and the Miami sound machine. Indoors allus beats outdoors in general for me. Green day at Sheffield arena were awesome. the crowd matched em. Ps Daft thing was. I thought I'd give Gloria a second look. (At the arena) as the sound system at the city hall kept failing. Big mistake. Still a poor show.
My favourite thing about U2 is the story from a gig where between songs Bono starts dramatically slow clapping, and after a few claps says "every time I clap a child in Africa dies" only for someone in the crowd to pipe up "well stop clapping then, you cunt." I can't stand him or his b(l)and, the humanitarian tax exile. For me it's a toss up between Led Zeppelin and Radiohead. But if I'm trying to look at it objectively the answer is the Beatles and it's not even close.
In danger of changing the direction of the thread here but was blown away by Lloyd Cole and the Commotions at the City Hall and performance wise Judie Tzuke may not be everyone’s taste but she was out of this world.
But did/do you like their music.?. Plenty of obnoxious two hats make good music. I knew one guy who said he didn't like Will Young cos he was Gay. I asked him if he liked Elton John or Queen. ( Freddie Mercury. ) Answered yes. what a plonker.
Judie Tzuke was the first person I saw ‘live’ using backing tracks on some songs instead of a live band , Newcastle Uni 1980 ,someone in the audience shouted ‘ it’s not effing Top of the Pops ‘ she wasn’t happy
