Bit of a Sunday afternoon ponderer. I'm just purely going with the players I've actually seen play with mine, but would love to hear the thoughts of some of the posters who saw players like McCarthy, Banks, Winstanley and maybe even Tommy Taylor. I'm sure they'd blow some of my choices out of the water. ------------------------------Watson------------------------------ ---------------Stones--------Morgan-------Moses------------------- Eaden---------------------------------------------------------Holgate ----------------Butterfield------Kay-------Bree------------------------- -----------------------Liddell---------Hirst----------------------------- Apologies for Morgan, but on ability alone, he's got to be in there. Seems like we can produce some decent defenders but struggle with attacking players!
Okay, homegrown as in came through the youth system at Barnsley as a trainee. Developed by us from being a schoolboy on YTS as it was or as an Academy scholar. Doesn't matter where they were born.
Watson Eaden Stones McCarthy Barker (Although this was only because I couldn't remember a single other left back to come through the ranks) Agnew Butterfield Banks Liddell Hirst Speedie
Left-back is a tricky one which is odd given we've produced enough good right-backs to dish out across England. Robbie Williams was the only other I could think of. Hopefully folk doing this in 20 years time will have George Smith as a shoo-in
Paul cross was right bank. Replaced Joe Joyce. Unless I'm high again. Do we count John Beresford or Mark Robinson as homegrown both made their league debuts for us.
Paul Cross was a left back, played with Joyce at times. Mark Robinson was a right back who would've replaced Joyce although someone else may have done a season or two. Good shout on Beresford. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Cross_(footballer)
Not sure why you should have to have seen those players play to know if they were any good or not. McCarthy was much better than Morgan. Banks, even after a night in Rebecca's, would have trounced that midfield. Pat Howard was better than Winstanley, going on to Newcastle and Arsenal. Winstanley went on to Chesterfield. As for Tommy Taylor, check the history books. He played 19 times for England, scoring 16 goals. He was our record transfer from the club after scoring 26 goals for us in 44 matches. For Man United he scored 112 goals in 144 matches. He was the only player they signed in 4 years, otherwise relying on youth players to put together the Busby Babes. He was also, I believe, the last England player to score hat-tricks in consecutive appearances. And he was the first player to score both home and away in the same round of European Cup games against Real Madrid, in seasons when Madrid won the cup too. No one else did that for another 5 years or so, when Madrid were no longer holders. Andy Liddell and David Hirst? Give over. 3 caps and 1 goal for England between them.
Fair enough, see what you mean. But then some are easier to judge second-hand than others. Tommy Taylor should be in any I suppose as he has achieved more in the game than any other former Barnsley player, may have been one of the all time greats had he not been tragically killed. But people like Pat Howard, you mention, or Chambers like others have? Well I've no idea about them other than the word of others. They don't come into the outstanding category like Taylor. I would be basing my decision purely on the opinions of others, so easier to just stick to those I've seen and rule out anyone else. Love hearing the thoughts of fans on players of the past though.
