sorry if this has already been raised before but been absent from this forum for a while and only just managed to get back on... So was just thinking about unbelievable performances at Oakwell over the years for players against us and I would go with: 1. Ginola for Spurs (the game where he scored 'that' goal), think we played them 4 times that year and he was amazing every game (should have got player of year that season for me) 2. Stan Collymore, when he played for Notts Forest against us, unbelievable 3. Robert Prosinecki, Portsmouth. world class, was one of my fav players over the years and couldnt wait to see him play Im sure I have forgot quite a few and would be interested what you lot think of.
Ricky Otto for Southend - they did us 3-1 - he scored a goal from the touchline that made David Watson look daft. On a serious note - Bergkamp - best footballer I've seen live.
i can only remember his performance at highbury, was out of this world the arsenal fans sang weve got denis bergkamp for 90mins!
Previous thread... http://bbs.barnsleyfc.org.uk/showth...-teams-player-at-oakwell&highlight=Prosinecki
thanks for that thread! bellamy yes was sick! i remember when he came on as sub aswell after serious inury and scored
My favourite performances from opposition players are those who score own goals, give away penalties or get red cards. Could do with 2 or 3 of those on Saturday.
The two most dominating performances I remember actually came in pre-season friendlies. Daniel De Ridder for Wigan Athletic. He absolutely ripped us to pieces. He was all over the pitch. He looked a real star that day, alas he never really did it for Wigan that season, in fact I don't think he did much of anything after that performance... Adam Johnson for Middlesborough. Again, a similar type of performance to De Ridders. He was all over the place, the ball control and dribbling ability he demonstrated that day was truly a joy to behold. In competitive matches, the aforementioned Prosinecki for Portsmouth. He just controlled that game in a way I've never seen before. Truly amazing.
A certain couple of Italians for Chelsea in the Prem league at Oakwell Vialli was unplayable that day. and Zola did a bit as well if memory serves.
You would have impressed, then, when former player, John Dungworth, returned for a real six-pointer in promotion season between us and Aldershot. We won 2-0 thanks to an own goal by Dungworth and a penalty conceded by .... you guessed it. Best comment of the night: 'Ay up, John, what is a dung worth?' He did not disappoint!
Peter crouch?? The same pompy team as prosineski i think when he scored a few headers. He was unplayable
Never nice to see us get thumped but....... Vialli for Chelsea 1997 (four goals). Absolute world class. But may 'favourite' (if that's the right word in this context) - Rush and Dalglish for Liverpool, 0-4, FA Cup at Oakwell, 1986 (I think). Two absolute Rolls Royces against us. With your objective hat on - pleasure to watch.
Can't remember what his name was but there was a young lad on the wing for Wolves who ran his nackers off for 80 minutes till he was subbed, closing people down and showing some decent skill as well. He got a standing ovation from the Barnsley fans and he himself applauded the Ponty End as well as the Wolves fans when he went off. Just the sort of performance that is sadly lacking now.
Either Adrian Pennock for Gillingham, when the Reds fans gave him some stick and he started playing to the crowd, comedy gold, or Rory Fallon in his first game back at Oakwell, when he got subbed and out of habit went and sat on the home bench. He didn't see the funny side of it!
Robert Prosinecki for Portsmouth both away but particularly at Oakwell. That man is an absolute genius. The best display I've ever seen in the flesh. Second Dalian Atkinson for Ipswich when David Currie made his debut. This season Anya for Watford destroyed us both games
Prosinecki was absolutely sublime when he played against us for Portsmouth. He was at the arse end of his career, most probably overweight and was well known for smoking like a chimney. And yet he was still an absolute joy to watch, a class above anything i'd seen for a long time. Didn't need to run, and just dictated the game & controlled everything Pompey did. Utter class.
Atilio Lombardo When he was player-manager at Crystal Palace. Super professional. Been one of my hero's ever since. You are right about Collymore though. I often say he was one of the best players I have ever seen live (when at Forest). He was unplayable at times. I saw him play against Man Utd (both home and away actually) and they couldn't deal with him. Interestingly Suarez and Sturridge have only just broken the record for the best Liverpool strike partnership, which was previously held by Collymore and Fowler in his first season. Pity it went downhill from there because he was some talent.
Ray Houghton for Fulham and Sylvain Distin for Newcastle in a league Cup game to add to others above.
