I've been trying for years to find out Barnsleys biggest away following not counting Wembley or Millenium games. In my opinion the game at Anfield must be the record (1982).I believe we took 16 thousand fans that night but I can't get it confirmed by anyone.I don't only class that game as the record following for BFC but the biggest following of any team in a domestic game.Does anybody know that the above is a fact or is it a figment of my imagination that as grown as I've got older?

We would have walked to Anfield if we had to that night. We just got there for the kick-off, a fantastic night of football I'll never forget

We got there just before half time, having walked the last mile or two and dodged a few assaults by scouse scallies :)

 I'm sorry for bringing that memory back. But was it worth it in the end?

Not sure about the Anfield game but I think there were 15,000 at White Hart Lane for the FA Cup replay against Enfield, 1980 I think.

Missed all the first half and 10 minutes of the second. Wish we'd left the car on the East Lancs road and walked.....

I'd say there were definitely more at Anfield. It took 6 hours by coach from London to get to Liverpool due to snow and freezing conditions. We may even have outnumbered them. I got in about 10 minutes before half-time. I'd say that's the best ever performance by any Barnsley team I've ever seen, a draw away at the then European Champions.

We filled the away end at White Hart Lane (1981 it was) but I wouldn't say there were more than 6 or so thousand of us. There was film of it on the London news that night but I've never seen any film of it since.

I think we took 8k to White Hart Lane which in its self was fantastic.

    From my vague recollections:-
    16-17,000 at Liverpool 1982
8,000 at Enfield (at White Hart Lane)
8,000 at Bramall Lane in FA Cup 2-2 draw early 90s
7,000 at Stoke FA Cup early 90s (where we were penned in down the side)
7,000 at Newcastle in 1998 FA Cup - where they split the Barnsley fans up into small sections.
10,000 at Old Trafford - FA Cup, same season

We also consistently sold upper tier plus lower standing and corner at Hillsborough, which in those days was around 8,000 I think

oh and 7,000 to Arsenal late 80s/ early 90s. The season we beat Caernarfon and Aldershot.

Remember the Police outside the ground saying we had brought more fans than Arsenal...

My dear, you forgot about the corner at Hillsborough and the countless 100s in the home areas. I can remember sitting with the piggies, when Ronny Glavin came on it seemed like the whole ground went mad :)

So i'll go for 10 000 at Hillsborough.

There were more at the Enfield game than the Spurs/Arsenal game the previous Saturday . Amazing.

What about Middlesboro away, same cup run as Enfield?

Packed like sardines into the old old Ayresome Park.

Biggest away followings I can remember being part of were that Boro match, Scousers away and a few games at Hillsborough.

And Huddersfield away, old third division, game that ended that long unbeaten (23 ?) run, and if memory serves around about the same time as the Boro match above. Think there were 29k there (which got a mention on MOTD).

    Re: Boro and Hudds

Have we got a club historian who comes on this board? I would really like to know if 16k is a uk away record.

Went to Middlesboro as a 9yr old in 1981. Coach broke down on way home so fans had to push it down road to nearest pub and try and get it going. It was packed in away end. Mike Lester scored for us. If I recall there was a wall dividing the terrace behind the goal where we were. I couldn't see much so my dad sat me on the wall. Stewards kept making me get down because Boro fans sat behind were complaining.

Barnsley: New, Joyce, Chambers, Glavin, Banks, McCarthy, Cooper, Riley, Aylott, Lester, Downes.

Had to get train to Anfield in 82. Thank god we did because the weather was dreadful. Fans turning up late into 2nd half

There were loads of Barnsley fans in family stand to the right of the Barnsley fans looking towards pitch.and there were loads in other side of family stand mixed with boro supporters and fighting throughout match with police laughing at the predicament of the Barnsley fans trapped and hooligan boro fans surging through in hit and run attacks . heard we sold 15,000 tickets that day don't know if that was so.

You're probably right but I remember seeing something in the papers that there were 36,000 at White Hart Lane with about 15,000 estimated to be from Barnsley. I was there but not in the away end and there were a few other Reds fans near me.
