Barnsley FC exited the Emirates FA Cup at Oakwell, as they were defeated 4-3 on penalties by Bristol Rovers in their second round clash, having drawn 0-0 at the conclusion of play. The Reds started brightly, with a number of chances in the opening minutes. In the 11th minute, Georgie Gent came close to an opener when the left wing-back picked up the ball in space and hit a 30-yard shot which was directed just wide of the target. Six minutes later, Stephen Humphrys had an opportunity to break the deadlock, when he received the ball at the edge of the box, cutting in onto his left foot, but the shot was directed straight into the arms of Josh Griffiths. After 20 minutes, Kelechi Nwakali hit a thunderous shot from outside the box, forcing the Rovers keeper into a diving save, After 31 minutes, Luca Connell and Humphrys displayed some brilliant link-up play in the 18-yard box leading to a shot from Humphrys being blocked. The deflection fell to Keillor-Dunn who dragged his shot narrowly wide off the post. With 10 minutes of the first half remaining, the Reds looked more threatening on the attack. Humphrys struck a brilliant shot from a distance hitting the woodwork. Bristol almost hit Barnsley on the counter but Georgie Gent held the ball up well and prevented the opposition from breaking. Despite an impressive display of football from the Reds in the first 45, they were unable to capitalise on their chances, and the score remained goalless. HALF TIME: Barnsley FC 0-0 Bristol Rovers Darrell Clarke’s men started the second half well, continuing to produce a number of potential goalscoring opportunities in the final third. Adam Phillips almost headed home for the Reds in the first 30 seconds of the second half, but his effort was directed onto the crossbar. Barnsley almost broke the deadlock just minutes later when Humphrys pounced on a mistake from the Bristol Rovers defence, but Josh Griffiths denied the striker. Barnsley came close to taking the lead in the 61st minute when Phillips drove to the byline, cutting it back to the edge of the six-yard box, but the Reds could not get their shot off. Rovers countered quickly but Maël de Gevigney displayed some great defensive work, stopping the visitors’ attack. In the 76th minute, Georgie Gent played a great ball into the box from the left flank reaching Fábio Jaló, but the substitute's shot went wide. In the first minute of added time, Kyran Lofthouse made a fantastic run down the right flank, playing the ball into the feet of Jaló who turned to shoot forcing the keeper into a save. Both teams worked hard to break the deadlock but after 90 minutes, the score remained 0-0 resulting in 30 minutes of extra time. END OF 90 MINUTES: Barnsley FC 0-0 Bristol Rovers After the first 15 minutes of extra time, neither side could find an opener. In the 112th minute, Barry Cotter drove down the right wing, whipping the ball onto the head of Sam Cosgrove who could only direct the ball over the crossbar. In the 116th minute, Jaló made a great run down the centre of the pitch, playing the ball out to Lofthouse who put a deep cross into the box reaching Adam Phillips whose header was straight into the arms of the Rovers keeper. Sam Cosgrove had the opportunity for a last-minute winner, but his header was directed straight at Josh Griffiths, meaning the game would be decided on penalties. END OF EXTRA TIME: Barnsley FC 0-0 Bristol Rovers Adam Phillips stepped up to take Barnsley’s first penalty kick, but his effort struck the left post. Chris Martin was the first Rovers player to take his penalty, slotting the ball past Killip into the bottom left corner. Jon Russell and Jaló both netted for the Reds, with Sotiriou, Sinclair and Forde following suit for the visitors, meaning that Josh Earl had to score in order to keep the Reds in the game. The defender was unable to dispatch his spotkick, meaning that Darrell Clarke’s men exited the Emirates FA Cup at the second round stage.
