    Barnsley FC produced a positive performance and gained a point, after a 1-1 draw at York City Ladies in the FAWNL Division One North.

    Barnsley started on top, with Louise Biggins striking the crossbar from a 20-yard free-kick inside seven minutes. Later, Lauryn Wilcock’s in-swinging corner caused was parried wide by Becky Sidwell – Biggins headed over from the following corner.

    However, it was York that found the opener after 27 minutes when a cross into the box from the left-hand side was parried by goalkeeper Nyla Peterkin, but it was only as far as Grace Sykes who smashed the ball into the top corner.

    Barnsley came close to levelling in the 34th minute when Alayna Millard was played in on goal and had a shot saved low by York’s Sidwell. Millard also shot wide from inside the box moments later.

    The Reds came to an equaliser again when Jodie Gregory was found inside the box and hit a strong and fast effort at goal which was parried over by Sidwell.

    Lissa Woodhouse and Millard came the closest to finding Barnsley’s first goal, a move on the 44th minute resulted in Woodhouse having a from inside the box which was saved by Sidwell. The goalkeeper then made another fantastic stop to keep out Millard’s rebound from close-range.

    HALF TIME: York City Ladies 1-0 Barnsley FC Women

    The start of the second half saw Barnsley begin positive, inside the opening minute Wilcock crossed into the box for Woodhouse to flick an effort just over the bar.

    There were several other half chances for Barnsley as the game went on, with the most notable being a Sharone Buckle poked effort being captured by Sidwell from close-range following a corner.

    In the 64th minute, Wilcock placed a free kick on target from the right-hand side of the box, Sidwell parried the ball but only into the path of captain Charley Evans. The latter beat the goalkeeper with an effort but saw it then cleared off the line by a York defender.

    All of the attacking pressure paid off in the 73rd minute when substitute Betty Cheetham burst down the right wing and crossed the ball into the box for Millard, who improvised to volley the ball from slightly behind her and into the back of the net.

    Peterkin came to Barnsley’s rescue with two minutes of normal time left to play when she saved a York penalty after Buckle committed a foul in the area.

    Neither side could find the winning goal and settled for a point. The result now means Barnsley FC Women are unbeaten in the last three games and head to AFC Fylde Women, next Sunday.
