Barnsley Football Club can confirm Kyran Lofthouse has joined Burton Albion on loan until the end of the season. The versatile full-back joined the Reds from Woking in July 2023 and subsequently enjoyed positive loan spells at both Gateshead and MK Dons before returning to Darrell Clarke’s squad in the summer. Lofthouse has featured 25 times for Barnsley this season. Sporting Director Mladen Sormaz said, “We are happy with Kyran’s performances this season, but we also feel that it’s important that he continues to get regular minutes to ensure he progresses in the way we know he can. We look forward to welcoming Kyran back to Oakwell in the summer.” Continue reading...
Squad depth is that good we can afford to loan out players who are getting regular minutes off the bench
For me, this is an odd one. Lofthouse had rave reviews whilst at MK Dons, player of the season I believe. So, we've seen fit to loan him out to a team in the same division for them to hopefully aid his development, whilst we bring in a PL hopeful in the same position with a less than auspicious history to aid theirs? Why don't we have faith in our vast coaching team to advance our own future first teamers rather than take on bloated PL squad fringe players, who'll be gone in the summer.
It’s because the club (in my opinion) are rudderless and this feels like a case of signing someone because we can. my bigger concern is that we have played this system/formation for a fair few years now, so why have we no-one from the academy who is deemed good enough to step in at L1 level, yet the bulk of their development has been at a championship club - get shut of the academy and save at least a £1m a year
