    • Barnsley Vs. Shrewsbury Town - Sat, Apr 26 2025, 15:00
Barnsley endured a frustrating afternoon at Oakwell, falling to a 2–1 defeat against already-relegated Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.

Despite dominating large periods of the match, the Reds were undone by two clinical finishes from John Marquis, who secured the visitors’ first win in 15 outings.

The Reds started the game on the front foot, controlling possession and probing the Shrewsbury defence. However, it was the visitors who struck first, somewhat against the run of play. In the 18th minute, Luca Hoole found space down the right flank, beating his marker before fizzing a low cross into the area. Marquis timed his run to meet the ball and guide it beyond Joe Gauci.

Barnsley responded, pushing men forward in search of an equaliser. Marc Roberts rose highest to meet a corner midway through the half, but his powerful header was smartly tipped over by Jamal Blackman. Shortly afterwards, Adam Phillips tried his luck from distance, forcing another fine save from the Shrewsbury stopper, who would prove to be a thorn in Barnsley’s side all afternoon.

After the break, the Reds continued to dominate possession, but struggled to find a way through a resolute Shrewsbury backline. On 67 minutes, the visitors struck again. A flowing counter-attack saw Callum Stewart deliver an inviting ball into the box, which Marquis met with an instinctive backheel, doubling Shrewsbury's advantage.

The Reds' persistence paid off in the 78th minute when a defensive lapse gifted Jon Russell the opportunity to pull one back. The midfielder reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box, calmly slotting home to give the Reds a lifeline.

Sensing a potential comeback, Barnsley piled on the pressure in the closing stages. Substitute Max Watters also went close with a snapshot from inside the area. Despite their relentless efforts, the elusive second goal would not come.

    Full-time: Reds 1-2 Shrewsbury Town
