The Reds took on another pre-season test on Tuesday night, this time travelling to the LNER Community Stadium to face York City in what proved to be an entertaining 2-2 draw.

The first chance of the game fell the way of the Reds; a pinpoint, long-range Murphy Cooper pass found Reyes Cleary, and the forward man showed impressive strength to hold off the York City defender and drive through onto goal before attempting a dinked finish, but the York goalkeeper produced a smart save before Cleary’s rebound effort was cleared off the line.

Just moments later the hosts took the lead in impressive fashion; some intricate play on the edge of the Reds box resulted in Ollie Banks finding some space, and the midfielder had no qualms in pulling the trigger and produced a fine curling effort that found the back of the net from twenty yards out.

The Reds reacted well to going behind; some neat play between Davis Keillor-Dunn and Caylan Vickers resulted in the new signing producing an effort that looked destined for the bottom corner, but the York goalkeeper produced another fine save.

The game continued to be played at a frantic pace, and in the twenty-second minute, Tyrese Sinclair produced a mazy run before cutting inside and unleashing a powerful effort that forced Murphy Cooper into a fine, acrobatic save to maintain the hosts advantage of just one.

The second period of the first half was much quieter, but on the stroke of halftime a Davis Keillor-Dunn delivery found the head of Vimal Yoganathan, but the midfielder’s effort lacked the necessary accuracy to level the scoring.

Just ten minutes into the second half, the Reds levelled the scoring. Caylan Vickers made a smart run in behind the York City defence, which was found by an inch-perfect pass by Jon Russell, and the new signing made no mistake and calmly slotted the ball into the back of the net to level proceedings. The Reds continued to pile on the pressure and moments later almost had the lead. A neat passage of play on the edge of the York box resulted in Caylan Vickers driving to the bar line before pulling the ball back into Keillor-Dunn’s path, but the forward couldn’t generate the power to trouble the York City goalkeeper.

In the sixty-sixth minute, the Reds came agonisingly close to taking the lead; an impressive run from Ogbeta resulted in the fullback finding himself in the box before taking a strike that crashed against the post.

In the seventy-first minute, the hosts regained the lead; a spell of play down the right-hand side resulted in the ball being played across the box, and Ollie Pearce finished from close range.

Just moments later, in the seventy-fifth minute, the Reds once again levelled. David McGoldrick made an instant impact, brilliantly controlling the ball before delivering an inch-perfect pass into the path of Phillips, who was denied the first time of asking but made no mistake with his second rebounded attempt.

On the eighty-first minute, Tyrese Sinclair almost produced a superb free kick from all of thirty yards out, but his effort brushed the post and went out for a goal kick.
