    • Charlton Athletic Vs. Barnsley - Tue, Mar 04 2025, 19:45
Barnsley's three-game win streak came to an end against Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.

A narrow one-nil scoreline extended the hosts' run at the Valley to four straight victories in Sky Bet League One.

The Reds began the game brightly, Stephen Humphrys getting an early sight of goal inside the opening minute, but his effort was deflected behind for a corner. A well-worked routine allowed Luca Connell to fire from the edge, but the Charlton defence stood strong to withstand the early pressure.

Against the run of play, the hosts took the lead on twelve minutes. Macauley Gillesphey was the man to take a free-kick 25 yards out from goal with his left foot, the ball sneaking inside the near post.

A response was almost found imminently by the Reds, as Davis Keillor-Dunn danced his way into the area after receiving the ball just inside the Addicks' half, but his eventual effort was straight at the home 'keeper Will Mannion.

We were forced into an early change at the back at the half-hour mark, as Josh Earl sat on the turf with a complaint resulting in Connor Barratt entering the fray in his replacement.

Following the change, neither side were able to threaten either goalkeeper meaning the hosts' one-goal lead was intact going into the break.

    Half-time: Charlton Athletic 1-0 Reds

Darrell Clarke turned to his bench at the break, introducing both Max Watters and Josh Benson to replace Humphrys and Phillips.

Similarly to the end of the first period, both sides struggled to string together a sequence of play resulting in a chance.

A double change was made to try and freshen the attack, with Neil Farrugia and Jon Russell making way for Kelechi Nwakali and Dexter Lembikisa just after the hour mark.

The next goalkeeper to be tested was Jackson Smith, having to be at full stretch to deny Conor Coventry's long-range volley struck with power.

Reds: Smith (GK), Russell (Lembikisa 61'), Roberts, O'Keeffe, Phillips (Benson 46'), Earl (Barratt 31'), Keillor-Dunn, Humphrys (Watters 46'), Connell (c)

    Unused subs: Flavell (GK), Rodrigues.
