Barnsley fell to a late defeat at Oakwell against Exeter City on Tuesday evening.

The Grecians took the lead on twelve minutes via Ryan Trevitt's low drive from close range. Kieren Flavell did well to save twice with his legs in quick succession, but the rebound fell kindly to Trevitt who opened the deadlock.

Looking to get one back soon after going behind, Stephen Humphrys strode down the left wing, firstly flicking past an Exeter defender before knocking it around another. The attacker tried to sneak it into the near post, but Joe Whitworth in the Grecians' goal was equal to it.

The Reds' pressure increased, as Jon Russell was slid in down the side on the right. He turned and crossed across the front, but no red shirt could connect with the tempting delivery and level proceedings.

Just before the break, Exeter looked to have added a second but for the referee blowing for a foul. The ball was bundled over the line after a scrappy exchange in the area, but Russell was adjudged to have been fouled in the build-up meaning the visitors kept a one-goal advantage going into the break.

    Half-time: Reds 0-1 Exeter City

Conor Hourihane turned to his bench during the interval, introducing Luca Connell and Max Watters in replacement of Jonathan Bland and Kelechi Nwakali.

In the 58th minute, the Reds were back level. A counter-attack led by Davis Keillor-Dunn found Humphrys on the left who made no mistake when firing across Whitworth into the bottom corner.

Humphrys almost doubled his tally for the evening, the ball breaking to him in the box but Whitworth smothered well to deflect behind for a Reds corner.

Flavell was called into action once again, coming out quickly off his line to respond to a bouncing ball. The 'keeper did well but needed treatment following the intervention leading to a short break in play.

Fresh legs were introduced with fifteen to play, as Jonathan Lewis entered the fray in replacement of Fábio Jaló.

Against the run of play, the visitors took the ascendency with ten minutes to play. Josh Magennis dispossessed de Gevigney on the left, took the ball to the byline and smartly finished from close range.

Despite a late attacking change which saw Clément Rodrigues replace de Gevigney in added time, the Reds couldn't find an equalising goal at Oakwell.

    Full-time: Reds 1-2 Exeter City
