The Reds were held to a goalless draw at Oakwell against a resolute Burton side on Saturday lunchtime.

The opening ten minutes of the game were quiet, with both teams displaying good spells of possession but lacking chances on goal. The Reds' first chance came in the 11th minute when Adam Phillips struck the ball from outside the box, but it was straight at Max Crocombe. Kyran Lofthouse won Barnsley’s first corner of the game driving down the left flank, but his cross was cut out by the Albion right back.

A misplaced pass from Davies Keillor-Dunn almost worried the Barnsley defence, but it was well dealt with, and the visitors were awarded a corner kick. In the 21st minute, Keillor-Dunn drove at the Albion defence taking his shot from outside the box, but it curled wide of the right post.

Some nice play down the left wing from Josh Earl and Steven Humphrys led to a cross into the box but it was won by an Albion defender. Jon Russell came close to opening the scoreline with a first time shot forcing Crocombe into a diving save.

There were large claims for a Barnsley penalty in the 32nd minute as Phillips fell to the ground in the area, but the referee allowed the game to play on. A massive chance for the Reds came 38 minutes in when Keillor-Dunn headed the ball down to Humphrys, who played it to Lofthouse, but he could not direct his shot on target.

With minimal chances created in the first 45, the score remained goalless.

Half Time: Barnsley 0-0 Burton Albion

Lofthouse made a fantastic run down the left flank in the 52nd minute, crossing the ball into the box. It was met by Russell, who struck the ball first time, but his shot was wide of the goal. The visitors had a great chance to take the lead, but the Reds defended well and cleared the ball off the line.

Donovan Pines almost broke the deadlock with a back post header from an O’Keeffe corner, but a Burton Albion defender blocked his header off the line. A mistake from the Barnsley defence almost led to a goal for the visitors, but debutant Joe Gauci pulled off a brilliant save to keep the scores level.

Keillor-Dunn made a great run on the counterattack, winning a free kick just outside the box, but the set piece was aimed straight into the hands of the Albion keeper.

Despite a good battle from both teams, the game ended goalless.
