    • Barnsley Vs. Bolton Wanderers - Sat, Apr 12 2025, 15:00
Barnsley recorded their first victory under Interim Head Coach Conor Hourihane against Bolton Wanderers at Oakwell on Saturday afternoon.

The game began at a good tempo, Barnsley looking to press at every opportunity and apply pressure to the visitors early on.

This then paid when Jon Russell opened the scoring on fifteen minutes following an incisive attack. The central midfielder was picked out in space thirty yards from goal on the half-turn, before driving at the Bolton defence. A clever run by Stephen Humphrys created room for the Jamaican to open up and curl one into the bottom corner past Nathan Baxter.

It was the Reds who once again came closest, Adam Phillips letting fly from twenty-five yards just right of centre and forcing a smart stop from Baxter down to his right. Russell also connected with the rebound by following in at close range, but the spin of the ball favoured the Bolton 'keeper and he claimed.

Minutes later, it was the Reds who doubled their lead. A cleverly worked free-kick routine found Josh Earl at the back post who headed across goal for Fabio Jalo who was waiting in the box to tap home inside the six-yard box.

Aaron Morley was stretchered from the field following a challenge with Conor McCarthy, resulting in a lengthy stoppage towards the end of the first half. Eight minutes were added, but the Reds kept their two-goal advantage intact heading into the break.

    Half-time: Reds 2-0 Bolton Wanderers

The first big chance of the second period fell to the Reds on the counter-attack following a strong start to the half by the visitors. Humphrys broke away down the left-hand side, looked to cross across goal but Baxter read the pass and claimed comfortably.

Humphrys was substituted shortly after, replaced by Corey O'Keeffe.

Riding out the initial Bolton storm, Barnsley made it three on 71 minutes. Jalo grabbed his second of the game, receiving the ball from Davis Keillor-Dunn on the left, twisting in and out before emphatically smashing home into the roof of the net.

Aaron Collins got the visitors back in the game just three minutes later, running through on goal, and rounding the goalkeeper.

Four minutes from time, Russell became the second player to secure a brace as he rose highest at the back post to restore the Reds' three-goal advantage. Phillips was the man to stand it up to the back stick for the Jamaican to nod home for his eighth of the season.

A late substitution was made by Conor Hourihane in the 93rd minute, Jalo making way for the returning Barry Cotter.

The Reds rode out the remaining additional time to confirm a resounding victory at Oakwell.
