    • Peterborough United Vs. Barnsley - Sun, Dec 29 2024, 15:00

Barnsley signed off for 2024 with a 3-1 victory over Peterborough United in Sky Bet League One, making it eight away wins for the camapign.

The Reds made a bright start in the opening five minutes with Max Watters’ relentless pressing winning a corner, which was cleared by the hosts. Soon after, Keillor-Dunn found himself in space inside the area and was afforded a free header but the forward headed just over the mark.

Watters found himself in on goal via Luca Connell's throughball, only to be denied by the outstretched leg of Nicholas Bilokapic. The pace of the game began to slow with only half chances falling to the Reds, one in the form of a Jon Russell snap-shot which flew wide and an Adam Phillips free-kick from distance.

On the half-hour mark, Ben Kilip was called into action for the first time, making a fine save to deny Malik Mothersille one-on-one from close range. Despite being on top, the Reds went into the break goalless.

    Half-time: Peterborough United 0-0 Reds

The Reds came out of the blocks lightning fast following the restart, after a Corey O’Keeffe's throw-in into the box caused chaos, before Donovan Pines struck into the bottom corner on the half-turn to break the deadlock for the American's sixth goal since arriving in January.

Just under 10 minutes later, a smart set-piece routine doubled the lead for the Reds. O’Keeffe played a smart low ball towards the edge of the box which was met by Davis Keillor-Dunn and he expertly applied the finishing touch to crash the ball home with a curling, right-footed effort.

On the 73rd minute, Peterborough were awarded a penalty for grappling in the box following a corner delivery into the box which was subsequently tucked away by Mothersille from twelve yards.

Peterborough were reduced to ten men after the referee showed a straight red to Harley Mills for an untimely challenge on O’Keeffe.

Five minutes later, the Reds secured all three points on the road with a brilliant strike from Jon Russell. A powerful run up the pitch ended with the Jamaican bending a beautiful, curling stroke past the despairing Bilokapic and wrapping up all three points for Darrell Clarke's men.
