Barnsley Football Club is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mick Hayselden, a lifelong supporter, former director, and long-standing sponsor of the Club. Mick passed away peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, with his family by his side. Mick’s connection with Barnsley FC spanned nearly seven decades, starting with his first visit to Oakwell in 1953. His love for the club grew over the years, culminating in a deep, enduring relationship that saw him support the Reds as a fan, a sponsor, and a director. The Hayselden family’s commitment to Barnsley FC began in 1974 when Hayselden became a club sponsor. The company’s name became a familiar sight at Oakwell, featuring prominently on pitch-side boards and stands. Hayselden also served as the club’s main shirt sponsor from 1981 to 1984 and again in 1991. Mick’s personal dedication to Barnsley FC was unwavering; he and his family have held an executive box in the East Stand for over 20 years, with Mick attending games regularly until recently. Mick served as a director from 1984 to 2002, a transformative era for the club that included the unforgettable 1996/97 promotion to the Premiership. His leadership and passion during this historic period played a significant role in shaping Barnsley’s legacy. In recent years, Mick and Mel became regular attendees of the Reminiscent Reds group, a Barnsley FC Community Trust initiative designed to support those living with dementia. Mick’s willingness to share his experiences with the condition helped raise awareness and brought comfort to others facing similar challenges. Sadly, Mick’s health deteriorated over the past year, leading to his move into a care home. Despite these challenges, his love for the club never wavered, and he attended his final match at Oakwell earlier this season against Bristol Rovers with his son Mark, who is an Oakwell regular. Barnsley FC extends its heartfelt condolences to Mel, Mark, Claire, and the entire Hayselden family. Mick’s legacy at Oakwell will be remembered for generations, and his contributions both on and off the pitch will forever remain a cherished part of the club’s history. Rest in peace, Mick. Once a Red, Always a Red. Continue reading...
RIP in peace Mick. What an amazing achievement to be involved with in our promotion to the premiership, a memory that will hopefully have stopped with him forever.
Never met him but I appreciate all he did for the club. I have an old 1981 shirt with his name on it which I would wear for the next game, unfortunately it's too small for me now, must have shrunk. Anyway, commiserations to his friends and family.
