[BFC SITE] YOUNG REDS LOSE OUT IN BUXTON

A young Barnsley FC XI were defeated 3-1 at Buxton FC on Tuesday evening.

A team made up of players under the age of 21 and Academy trialists headed to Derbyshire to take on National League North outfit Buxton Football Club. Conor Hourihane’s first-team were also present and supported from the stands.

The hosts took the lead on the 14th minute, when Connor Kirby was played through on goal and slotted past Kieren Flavell in the Barnsley goal.

Forward Luke Alker was introduced well into the first half of play, after a Reds trialist pulled up with injury.

Barnsley equalised after 37 minutes, when build-up play from the Buxton back line was intercepted by Kieran Graham. He found himself a free run into the box and fired an effort into the bottom left-hand corner, adding to Graham's impressive pre-season showing.

The second half started with the hosts having the first effort, a shot from inside the box was well-dealt with by Flavell. The goalkeeper, with plenty of EFL experience last season, got a strong hand to push the ball over the bar.

Buxton regained the led six minutes into the second half via Johnny Johnston, a finish in front of goal after the ball was repossessed off the Barnsley back line.

The Reds came close to equalising after the hour mark when a Trialist had an effort from the edge of the box captured by former Red Paul Cooper in the Buxton goal.

Goalkeeper Rogan Ravenhill was subbed on during the second half and made his long-awaited return from injury. Ravenhill made a fantastic fingertip save to deny Buxton a third.

Ravenhill showed his class again later when saving a 74th minute penalty, a strong stop down to his right-hand side.

Buxton got their third with four minutes of time to go, a cross goalward was initially cleared off the line by Bayley McCann, before Tate Campbell drilled the ball in from close range.

The young Reds put in a good showing against the National League North first team. Our first team are back in action this weekend in a behind closed doors friendly. The Reds next pre-season game with spectators is away at Harrogate Town on Saturday 19th July, 3pm kick-off.
