Remember it well. How we won that game is still beyond me. Danny Wilson got the very worst kind of dog's abuse that day. Proper Cup Away Day that.
lol , hordes of barnsley fans wandering around bromsgrove giving it the big i am! like we were from some massive place and some massive club .. was quite funny thinking about it now
I'm perfectly relaxed mate. I just think there were dozens of truly exceptional games during John Dennis' time as chairman, but I don't think Bromsgrove was one of them. Surrounding area got smashed up by Barnsley fans giving it large, three pitch invasions, fans acting like they'd won the cup when for 85 minutes they'd given the players, particularly Danny Wislon, dogs abuse. We were completely outplayed that day and were very lucky to win, but we didn't take victory in good grace, we acted like a bunch of arseholes on what was probably Bromsgrove's biggest day in their history. For me it's not summat we should be celebrating and it shouldn't be part of the John Dennis evening tonight, particularly when there were so many excellent times when both fans and players acted exemplary.
I was on the pitch that day three times, l was at the front, a young un. I had no choice the hoarding at the front came down behind the goals and we were pushed onto the pitch from the older lads behind us. Manlito off here and their young un were stood with us and they ended up going in the side stand to get away from it. When you look at the full game video on youtube, they battered us. Goals are on 44mins & 47mins
I was 11 year old at the time, went down with r old boy and my uncle, and there were monkey chants coming from where we were stood pretty much every time their black striker got the ball. I asked my dad if it was Tony Daley when we first saw him as he had the same barnet. We never went onto the field either, and I'll always remember dad telling me "they're all fcukin idiots, Son" and watching the footage back I can see what he meant, now I'm older/wiser. Can't believe our fans celebrated that victory as though we'd beaten Wednesday in the European Cup Final. Bizarre to say the least. And the goading of the Bromsgrove supporters at the end is as sad as ****. I don't remember much of that day, and I'm thankful for that. Not a memory I'd put with some of our best that's for sure.
Shocking. Shows how recent racism was actually a big part in England's football. I mean being racist towards a lad who plays for a conference side in probably the biggest game of his life, supposed to be a proud moment for him, and is probably a bricky or summat like that it's just pathetic. Like you say, at the end its cringy to watch, acting like we beat a premier league team in the final or something. Tragic.
Before my time, but watching that footage is one of the only occasions I've been embarrassed to be a Barnsley fan. I'd expect that kind of behaviour from the supporters of many clubs, but never us. Hope nothing like that ever happens again.
For the record, I haven't even watched this clip. Please don't think I'm condoning whats on it. My comments are based on my recollection of the day. I condemn racist and violent behaviour of any kind. Hope that's cleared things up!
I think thats only a minority, looking at that footage l see a lot of our fans clapping them. Some home fans behind that goal are waving them in (kid stood on the barrier) from stories l've heard since there were a lot of Bromsgrove lads there who were fans of Midlands league clubs that Barnsley had some bother with. A cracking game never the less and an away game l enjoyed whilst a young un, when the FA Cup meant something.
Racist chanting.... Barnsley, specifically Oakwell is one of the most racist places I've ever been in....
I've heard a few disgusting words being said, under breath so not that many people hear them. Cowards.
