I remember at the time some on here hammering his style of play even though he got us to the championship play offs. What val did was have a system that played to the players he hads best abilities. Every player knew the system, no chopping and changing. He had players who would give 100% from the first whistle to the last. It's a million miles from what Clarke and these players are producing. People travelling up and down the country sat at oakwell in freezing cold to watch a players just play half hearted. Shocking
I would give an awful lot for Val back. Took a bottom half championship side and got them fit, organized and working hard. They all knew their role and the expectations from him and it worked. Didn't try and over complicate things and found a formula that worked.
What happened to that system being our ‘identity’?? Long gone are those days of attack attack attack now it’s yay we’ve scored now to sit back and turn into flockton under 12s for the rest of the game
That's not what I'm saying though, effort takes zero ability. And the organisation is nil under Clarke.
I loved watching it. Players were energetic chasing down balls and winning them back in the opponents’ half. Loved it.
Bang on the money, this was the point after his departure we decided we wanted to play like Pep's barca and start the process to change to possesion based football and subsequently got relegated. Val identified very quickly we weren't set up player wise to play this way hence we went long with high press and intensity suffocating opponents.
Done a big fat nothing in the many years since leaving us. I wouldnt getting him back because he's had one good season half a decade ago.
Winning football and a team that played 100mph for 90 odd minutes, didn't we get an injury time winner against Huddersfield? He was brilliant and had us punching well above our weight.
The board literally admitted they wanted to change it because they felt that style of football didn't market the players to potential suitors as effectively as they wanted. Never mind the fact that approach won games, they basically said that we're a shop window first and a football team second.
Exactly this. Khaled said we'd had a bad season because we got no bids for our players, even though we were within a few games of a Premier League return.
He'd get a damn sight more out of this side than Clarke does. At least they'd run and press. And if they didn't, they wouldn't play.
I don't know what went on at the other sides. Was never going to work at Watford, it doesn't for anyone. All I know is that when he was here he got every last bit out of what he had at the time. DC is clearly not, and hasn't managed it all season. I therefore would back Val to get way more out of this lot than we are seeing now.
Yes massive mistake, then a bigger one appointing schopp and the p.e teacher. Plenty on here moaned about the style of play though.
