In the first minute, having heard the team and seen the opening exchanges, I said to Grandfather Tyke: "This doesn't look good - we are seriously weak." GT agreed. How wrong can you be? What followed was a triumph of organisation and effort from the team. They kept their shape, defended resolutely, rode their luck, and attacked with purpose when the opportunity came to break. Every man jack put in a shift. It would be wrong to single anyone out. Having resolved to keep objective this season, I found myself drawn in, and positively willing the ten man reds to hang on. That they did so speaks volumes for this team, and also for Hillcroft. The passing was a joy to watch - you could forgive the occasional giveaway balls becuse of the determination to play the game the right way. The only downside was Sir Bobby's red card. Everyone has an aberration sometime. Anyway, that set up the tense finale! Bristol, depsite recent results, were - like Middlesbrough - made to look a poor team. It must have been frustrating to Hillcroft to have to try and build a team last season with such severely limited resources. We appear to have raised our sights with this year's intake. This season, the two home performances appear to have shown more of what they are aiming for. Massive well done to Keith, Flicker and all the team - performances like these first two home games will draw the crowds back.
