I am disappointed that Davey has said that there will be no more signings and worried because I dont think that the squad has been significantly improved by the signings he has already made. We saw last season how the squad was very thin at times - we have signed 4 and lost 3 with another 3 open to offers, so by the start of the season we could be even thinner. We have (counting Adam and Coulson) 7 strikers. One is on the list and two proved last year that they are not up to Championship football ( and I cant see any potential for improvement for either of them). That leaves us with 2 plus 2 teenagers. Although there are plenty of possible combinations for the defence is the loss of Nyatanga and Reid and aquisiton of Moore a significant improvement. I think not. Midfield again seems well covered but apart from the return of De Silva we have only the addition of two unknown quantities who may or may not be successful.
The disappointment is fueled by the hype of "significant funds" for the close season when infact we have spent less than last close season and by the constant moronic rumour mongering and blatant lies about sightings, number plates etc on this forum.
Think we are in for another long hard season.

Sorry I've not been online for a couple of days, when did Davey say he would make no more signings?

"Significant funds" may be hard to come by untill we transfer some of the squad and reduce the wage bill. But i agree with you we spent more last season on players and to be competetive in this league we need to bring in another quality striker and a leftback. Can't see for the life of me that Davey would stick to what he has. (chinny)

I disagree, I think the signing of Moore was a very good move. I rated Nyatanga very highly, but he made a lot of mistakes - in my opinion entirely down to his age and lack of experience. Now, with Moore here, I think he'll help the rest of the defence no end. I'm hoping Atkinson stays as I have high hopes for him, and having someone with Moore's experience can only improve him.

I think we have a decent midfield (this was shown when we had our first choice 4 fit and available) but also, when Howard was out, Leon came in and did a brilliant job in the middle (though he's no long term replacement - but is useful cover). Can't comment on the other 2, but for all we know they may improve the team no end. I'm impressed by the signing of Hume though he still isn't that goalscorer we need.

Maybe Davey still has something up his sleeve, I guess time will tell

    Don't Worry

    Be Happy :D

Seriously, I would be surprised if there are no more signings.

We all know we don't have a lot of money to spend when you compare us with the other Championship clubs, so my take is SD is keeping quiet over any potential signings. We knew nothing about the talks with Kevin Phillips until he had turned us down.

There is also the question of wages, and the need to reduce the wage bill before we get more on board.

As has been pointed out, Muller and Anderson weren't in at this time last season.

Let's keep positive. I know this is hard for Barnsley fans, but if we start talking like this before the season starts, we could be suicidal by kick-off!!

Apart from the daily threads saying we're after Kevin Phillips of course.

I also was happy with the signing of Moore and like you was aware of Nyatangas short commings but the important word was significant if Moore plays 90% of next seasons games fine but if he doesnt we are back to last seasons defence. Again I am happy with Hume but if he hits a lean spell who else do we have? again not a significant improvement over all. I think we are going to have to fall back on the emergence of Butterfield, Coulson, Adam, Atkinson and Potter and hope at least a couple can come good this season.

    Only rumour on this board

Nothing official from the club, and I didn't see it anywhere else.

Although it's disappointing, it's not a the biggest surprise in the world. At the beginning of closed season Davey had aluded to the fact that he'd be after a few players, but he'd also have to address the wage bill in order to do so. So it did demonstrate that the board or Cryne wasn't particularly willing to throw more money at players that Davey might have a hunch on this time unless he cleared the decks of the ones that had failed to produce. Phillips must have been one of those opportunities that the board agreed would be too good to miss, yet they probably don't agree with more potentially costly targets, based once again on 'potential'.

All this reporting about missing out on Phillips is just another example of poor decision making in my opinion. As many fans will now feel it was an empty gesture.

Plan B being Odejayi then.... woohoo.

    yet who knew

about Hulme, the Argie and the new winger or even Moore before we had practically signed them!?!

Phillips was a rumour on here and in the papers becasue it was a long contratc/transfer saga over a high profile player thats the reason why it was mentioned but how often did the club confirm any talks had been held etc.......................none!

I only expected a few signings this summer

However, I didn't think that two of those would be untried and untested players from abroad, one of which makes a career out of getting relegated from the Swiss premier league, while the other has done absolutely nothing as a pro despite looking a good prospect as a youth. When you're signing just a few players you've got to be sure they're right. El Haimour and Colace are a massive gamble. You'd think Davey would have learnt after being burnt with the likes of Mostto and Christensen.

We're not talking about the club confirming it

We're talking about who knew and everyone and his dog knew we were in for Phillips.

    Sorry, you're right

No one had the slightest incline we were in for Phillips and it had never been mentioned. Is that better?

What are you whittling on about?

barnsley66 said "We knew nothing about the talks with Kevin Phillips until he had turned us down." That simply isn't true. The main topic on this BBS throughout the summer has been the signing of Kevin Phillips. Hardly a day has gone by without his name being mentioned. When I've spoken to friends and family who have nothing to do with this BBS they have brought up the subject of Kevin Phillips and the fact that we've been in talks with him. You're trying to deny something that is documented fact. The fact that not all rumours turn out to be true has nothing to do with it. People knew we were in for Kevin Phillips. Just accept it you loony.
