    Poor Away Following

Although the glamour of the FA Cup died many years ago. It's just not as exciting anymore.

Just sent them a batch of 500, I know they often send 1000 to league teams! Can pay on the day so just make's sense to send some tickets in advance to avoid queues and get some money in incase people don't end up going!

    The glamour of the Cup.........

It seemed to die a death after Man United failed to defend the trophy in favour of a tournament in South America. Their actions also received the backing of the FA who were busy arse-wiping anyone they could possibly could in an effort to attain the World Cup Finals.

RE: The glamour of the Cup.........

I was telling my 11yr old of how exciting the FA Cup 3rd round used to be. Regardless of distance and opposition we always travelled well or if drawn at home the away end was usually quite full.

Now, if anything, less folk are turning out for it.

I still get the Cup fever bug every now and then :D . There's been some great days out with the Reds in the Cup. And like you said, we seemed to take a very healthy following to our away games. The Rotherham fixture in 1980/81 i think we were given an allocation of 9,000 and they sold out within two days.

Oh yes! A great day out indeed.... I think it was the first time we'd won at Millmoor in over 40 years, and the following season we then beat them for the first time in a League game (4-2)

Went to the cup game on the special and sang the customary "Barnsley boys are back in town again" lol. It was packed in our end and we ended up perched on the wall at the front. Can remember Aylott running through in the second half, beat their keeper but the ball dribbled wide of goal. Parker scored through a crowd of players into the Tivoli didnt he?

I think it was in front of the Tivoli, yes........ And what about the experience that is Millmoor Lane. It was horrible getting out of there when we went in large numbers.

Aye its never changed either. Swansea fan was killed by a police horse there a few yrs ago.

Speaking of retro maybe we ought to reintroduce the footy specials. Now they were a joy to travel on and were a great part of the whole day out. That and getting chased!

RE: The glamour of the Cup.........

The chant of "Barnsley boys we are here!" as everyone stepped onto the platform on arrival at whatever town. The alcohol ban when everyone used to top up large Coke/ Orange bottles with whatever short they fancied. On occasions, the mad dash back to the station when you was in jeopardy of missing your train. The escort through the streets towards the ground was always a loud occasion.... Taking over places like Chester, and trying to keep a low profile on the walk back from Fratton Park.

Even the trips on Wallace Arnold coaches were a good laugh. We once went to Swindon with the Outpost and bumped into a coach from Cudworth (Arthur Rowe's)in Shrivenham and by 2pm an argument had developed which spilled out into the main street. Both coaches were eventually escorted into Swindon. After the match i can well recall a few hundred 'Swindon Skins' charging towards the Barnsley supporters on a green behind the stand where we had been stood previously.

It certainly was Chippy's bus  Back in those days we seemed to attract quite a few Hemsworth lads amongst our ranks. Do many of them still go these days?

RE: The glamour of the Cup.........

During my early years of watching the reds ( Clarke/Hunter seasons) we used to get the bus from Crosshills in Hemsworth. Two buses used to come at once to accomodate the football fans and by the time the buses had left Hemsworth it was usually all standing for the rest of the journey to Barnsley. There are quite a few from Hemsworth and surrounding areas that still go on a regular basis but not in the numbers that we did then.

Do you know anyone in particular from Hemsworth?
