Barnsley Preview

By The Editor - 03/03/2008 21:41

There are no explanation for some things in life. How did Jade Goody became famous? Why do traffic lights always turn red when you're in a hurry? What's the point in Garth Crookes. Oh yeah and how the hell have Barnsley beaten us twice this season!

Having seen both our league and cup games at Oawell this season, it is one of the great mysteries how we failed to even get a draw in either game. In particular the FA Cup game was one of the most bizarre I can recall. Not under any pressure until 12 minutes from the end and then 3 minutes of madness and we were out of the FA Cup. To be honest I wasn't that bothered when we lost after I heard that the Tykes had been drawn away to Southend in the next round. Since then though, it's been the story of Barnsley's season as first they put Liverpool out of the Cup and then this weekend face Chelsea.
There's no doubt the cup has been a big distraction for Barnsley. Since beating us they've won just two of their nine league games - something that would have left us very much in the relegation places. As it is, the Tykes probably had done enough in the league to be able suffer that dip in form but just six points above the drop they'll be aware of the fact they need another few wins before their safety is assured. Victory against the Seasiders would put them on level points and would certainly take some of the pressure off them and mean they could enjoy this weekend's FA Cup game a lot more.
A win for Simon Grayson's side on Tuesday night would see them edging ever closer to that finishing line and it would also put to rest this awful Tuesday night record they have this season. Without a win the whole campaign they only have this game and next Tuesday's at QPR to rectify that. Steve McMahon always used to talk about 'After the Lord Mayor's Parade' and after two fantastic wins it would be annoying not to get anything from this game. Any talk of the play off is quite frankly ludicrous and I'm sure if we don't win then a point would satisfy most fans. Paul Dickov is hoping to recover from injury for this one and it would be terrific to see him form that partnership with Stephen McPhee again, if not then Andy Morrell should get the nod. Not a lot wrong elsewhere and so it'll probably be same again.
Barnsley's only away win this season came at Southampton back in September when they were in the play off places of the Championship. From the heady heights of 4th in the league, the Tykes have since gone on a run which has seen them pick up just 9 points from 30 since the turn of the year, Whatsmore they've scored just 3 goals in the last 8 games with Jonathan Macken and Daniel Nardiello scoring the goals. It'll be interesting to see how much the 'Chelsea effect' has on their players and I can imagine one or two tackles early doors will show their true colours! Centre-half Dennis Souza returns for Barnsley after suspension but Rob Kozluk serves a one-match ban. Kayode Odejayi and Martin Devaney are both pushing for a return.
With two unexpected wins, the pressure has been lifted somewhat off the Seasiders but the thought of a third defeat to the Tykes should be incentive enough for them not to take their foot off the pedal just yet.

Good preview I'll have a go: We'll struggle, we'll fail to score, we'll lose. The opposition is unimportant, the result is always the same.
Blackpool haven't won on a Tuesday night ? Easily sorted tonight.
8 points from 10 games, but everything irie Simon.

Being from the Islands It's my attempt at patois (sp)?
Didn't want my language to be too white.

That only applies in certain circumstances.
At least we're playing Chelsea when loads of non-Barnsley fans can come and take the piss. We'll remember about the league status in a week or so.
