After watching Barnsley for well over 50 years the various boards have always come in for some stick.Boards with no money, boards who wouldn't spend anything ,boards who couldn't spend anything, new fleets of wagons, luxury homes abroad, wheres the money gone pitch demo's "sack the board " etc.etc. Our current board has now fallen into the fans ire .All I can see is they've explained everything to us as at happens. What control have they on a player if he wants to leave?Slavery was abolished yonks ago and that's what it is if you keep a player who wants to go,Davies ,Pinnock Lyndsey etc.I accept we could have played hard ball with Moore but if he wanted to leave would his heart have been in it? My next issue with some who insist the board have sold Stendel short. The recruitment strategy has been done to death ( see sticky above) and apart from signing the financial side off I would dare say messers Conway, Lee Cryne etc have never heard of any of the players brought in. Maybe they could have raised the wage budget then that alone can cause unrest between the squad and the squads unity is one positive we have at the moment. So in a nut shell if some players are deemed not good enough its down to Stendel and the recruitment team.If we disbanded the recruitment team where would that leave us.Hecky said he needed the recruitment team because there wasn't enough hours in the day to coach and deal with signings so I would imagine Stendel is in the same boat. So whats happening is no different to the way its always been.John Denis for example was a zero then a hero then a zero again its just the way it is.All I would say is let personal vendettas to one side and try and see these guys like us want the best for Barnsley. Another question asked is what is the motive for the owners to invest in BFC I would answer that with another question what is the motive of any owners of any club? it seems to bring nothing but heartache and massive financial ruin.
Why does a consortium with no previous links to the club want what’s best for the town? Does Conway own Kes on DVD?
Like I said in my post what does any body buy a football club for.Chanseri yes I'm sure he was born and bred in S6 the bloke at Cardiff,Villa, Bournemouth the list is endless. And if the motive is purely money they need there investment to succeed not fail.
Players leaving. You can play hardball and insist on them honouring their contracts. If they want a juicy contract elsewhere thereafter then they have to keep performing. Not the greatest management strategy however. You can try and match the terms they've been offered elsewhere. Or you can replace them with players of similar experience and ability given current needs. Yes, this all costs money, but you are playing in a higher league with commensurate rewards. The final strategy is to pitch in raw recruits who are really long-term development projects. That is a hugely risky strategy, as we are discovering. Who directs that strategy? The Board, of course. This club was, prior to this season in a unique position in it's history in that it had no debt at all and the sixth wealthiest owners of any club in the entire country, including the Premier League. A modest amount of front-end funding purely to fund stability while we continue to develop the younger players would not at all have been an unreasonable approach. So no, it is not the usual 'blame the Board' situation. They have made their choice and they are to blame.
I've said on here before, when people are moaning about recruitment, that the owners have made it very clear what their approach is. Said approach is unlikely to change, and so your two choices as a fan are to either suck it up and accept it, or withdraw your support. After yesterday, I am leaning towards the latter, as I'm not sure I want to give distant billionaires my money in exchange for them neglecting their duties by failing to sign a proper left-back (amongst other things.)
How are they neglecting their duties by not signing a left back.Surely that's where Stendel and the recruitment team come into it. Wasn't Pinnock offered the highest contract ever made to a player 10k was mentioned.God knows what Brentford are paying him.The board said they had spoken to experienced players and there demands were off the scale. That goes back to breaking the wage structure and seeing where that takes us.I also believe if a player doesn't want to play for us sell them instead of them going for nothing. By the way did you applaud Pinnock on Saturday? I didn't because although I loved him as a player and a smashing bloke to boot he chose to leave us and take his career elsewhere.
That's fine - so you move on to attempting to replace like for like. Or you pitch in those who are not ready. I didn't applaud Pinnock - I was home and dry in front of the telly.
3-1 down, it's absolutely p*ssing it down and by the time Pinnock came on they were taking the p*ss out of us. By all means if you feel the need to show your support to a player who chose to leave us then do it after the match, don't give the warmest reception to an opposition player coming on.
I agree trying to replace with like for like or better.Obviously Stendel and the recruitment team thought they had.
I did because he gave his all for us last season and has moved to a club with better prospects and pay nearer his home. I dont begrudge him his chance in the same way I dont begrudge Davies.
I loved Pinnock as a player and I find it sad that he hasn't started the last four or five games for his new club. But what is like for like if you take emotional sentiment out of the equation? His only Championship experience was being fairly bit part in a team that was relegated from the Championship putting in far poorer performances than the one yesterday (in my opinion). I suppose Clarke at Pompey would be like for like, considering he didn't achieve promotion, but wasn't it £8 million and loaned back to the Champ? Defining like for like is hard because we saw them all perform so well last season. We lost Lindsay, Pinnock, Moore and Davies. We didn't lose experience of the Championship with those players, but we did lose 12 months experience of them playing the Stendel way.
Agree with a lot of this. Also see the argument that it's counterproductive to keep hold of an 'unhappy' player. To compare professional footballers being kept at their club to honour their contract to 'slavery' though borders on the ridiculous. Some people seem to think that footballers on 3-5k a week at Barnsley (when they could be on 20k at Stoke for example) is the footballing equivalent of selling the big issue i.e. they are struggling to get by. I think they'll get by, even if their 'career' ends at 33 etc. As someone mentioned in another thread, the opportunities as coaches/punditry etc. are there if they want it. Also, all this 'feeling sorry for these young uns' - I get the sentiment, but again they are on a decent wage, and some of the simple mistakes yesterday were straight out of Sunday League. Not mentioning names but repeatedly passing a short ball straight to the opposition is a basic error at any level, 'mester's league' or not. You would get punished at 5-a-side, never mind the unforgiving Championship. I do think though that clearly some responsibility lies with the board in not adequately replacing the players we have lost, but I suppose we all knew that it would take much more than 10 games for so many new players in a league above to adjust, so the jury is still out to an extent.
I used to blame the board all the time when I was a teenager. Ernest Dennis was the chairman and I was convinced I knew better than him how to run the club. I achieved all this knowledge without having done a day's work in my life, nor ever shouldering an ounce of responsibility!
We’ve started the season without a striker who can win a header or hold the ball up. Whoever’s decision that was isn’t fit to be in their job & I’m pretty certain it won’t have been Stendel’s decision given how Moore started virtually every game he was available under him. It’s a pretty simple game football, if you’re one of the best sides in the league you don’t tend to need a player who can hold it up as you can pass through teams (see Leeds), for about two thirds of the sides you need some kind of physical presence to win headers, battle with centre backs & hold the ball up to lay off to your strike partner, wingers & midfielders. See Fletcher, Jutkiewitz etc. Once it became evident they were going to sell Moore it should’ve been the number one priority for the club to bring in a player of his type. In almost every other position if you’re short you can get another player to cover that position you can’t do that with that type of striker. So yes the board deserve all the stick they’re getting.
I agree with you - if they don't want to stay then you have to sell. I didn't clap him, he did a job for us and when a better offer came along he left, I felt neither disapproval nor a need to boost his ego - just 'Meh'.
