The general feeling from fans at the moment is pretty optimistic, apart from the minority who moan and moan about John Dennis' running of the club and how they think he has no ambition etc. Which for me I can't really understand the mentallity of. JD has to be praised on the signing of Nigel Spackman, I don't think people realise what a quality manager and person we have in him. He's the best manager we've had since Danny Wilson, and in my view, will propel us into the Premiership in even better style than Danny did. Ok it may take a couple of seasons or so, but what with the new state of the art facilities we have, new sponsors, signings and the general haul out of staff since Nigel took over then anyone who doesn't see this club prospering must be either blind or plain daft.

Balancing the books

OK, we are not rolling in money, but I believe this to be a good thing. Look at a team like Crystal Palace, over the past 5 years, they have had as much success if not even less, than Barnsley, and last year saw them nearly get relegated and were in debt bigtime. Sheff Wednesday are another team gone down the panner a Big Club in deep **** really.

Take Dean Gorres quote about Huddersfield Town for example:

'It was only a few years ago that Barnsley were in the Premiership and I can tell you that everything at the club is geared up for a return. The facilities are first class. We have a swimming pool and a state-of-the-art gym and the club seems keen to embrace new ideas and techniques. It is such a change from being at Huddersfield.

At Huddersfield the philosophy seemed to be just spend money on players and don't worry about the off-the-field structure of the club. This seems to be shared by a lot of clubs in the First Division and it is wrong.

Clubs need to look at every aspect of the way they are run, and if they want to get into the Premiership, they need to act like one. After Huddersfield replaced Steve Bruce they were never going anywhere. Although we had a lot of talented players, the off-the-field structure just wasn't there. At Barnsley it is.' I can't help but share his optimism. Lets hope his positiveness rubs off on the pitch.
