'keeper hunt is put on hold
BARNSLEY boss Andy Ritchie has given up on his quest to bring in a goalkeeper for tonight's clash with Middlesbrough at Oakwell and the search for a striker has been put on the back-burner. Ritchie's first choice keeper Nick Colgan will face the Premiership team with Kyle Letheran as back-up on the bench. Despite conceding three goals in two appearances, Letheran, who has Welsh Under-21 caps to his credit, has won admirers at Oakwell and so long as he gets the nod of approval from goalkeeping coach John Lukic, the youngster will be offered a contract. Ritchie still wants a senior keeper to fill the slot behind Colgan and is optimistic he can reveal a new recruit by the end of this week. The search for a striker will take longer. "It is not the priority at the moment," Ritchie conceded. "And in any case the Premiership clubs we've spoken to don't want to let their players out on loan until the end of August. They want to assess what they've got." Although Daniel Nardiello has been ruled out for the start of the season, Barnsley have Marc Richards and Paul Hayes eager to prove themselves in the Championship and waiting in the wings are Nathan Jarman and Michael Coulson. Chesterfield's interest in Jarman has cooled since they signed Paul Shaw. He figured in a pre-season game for the Spireites and impressed manager Roy McFarland who said he was not about to make a decision but would keep an eye on the Jarman situation. Coulson will be on the bench tonight. He and Jarman scored two apiece in the 4-2 win at Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday. Coulson has impressed Ritchie since arriving from Scarborough. "He has done very, very well," Ritchie said. "We have high hopes for his career if he keeps developing. He is a strong little player. We've got a very good young prospect in him." Barnsley go into the game having played only one serious first team friendly. That was last week at Boston. Looking forward to tonight, Ritchie reckoned: "This is the sternest fixture we have faced. We are hoping to give a decent account of ourselves. Middlesbrough will be bringing a very decent side here." Ritchie also confirmed that triallist Colin Healy will play a part in tonight's friendly.
25 July 2006 « Previous PageNext »Page 1 of 1 More Barnsley Sport

internet tw@t asks bloke who knows what's going off Any chance you can try to sign a centre half seeing as a striker is "not the priority at the moment"? Thanks.
RE: internet tw@t asks bloke who knows what's going off Surely a centre half isnt priority. It wasnt last week anyway, it was a striker. Oh. It cant be a midfielder we have bucket loads of them, so it must be the reserve keeper. Which we have almost sorted, just another couple of days.
"And in any case the Premiership clubs we've spoken to don't want to let their players out on loan until the end of August." I know we have this every time, but I never know whats going on. Can we get loan players outside of the transfer window?
basically Were going with what we have got + Letheran and Healy and Kell is crocked again so nailed on to win a contract.
