history would suggest HDDVD...

...will evntually be chosen by the masses, as it is slightly lower quality but slightly cheaper in the same way as VHS was lower quality but cheaper than Betamax.

the problem with betamax wasn't price or quality...

...it was licensing and distribution, all of which was controlled by Sony. VHS was like the open format that anyone could build and sell, so it took off. Sony should have learnt an expensive lesson with Betamax, and they'd be foolish to repeat it with Blu-Ray.

    RE: exactly

ooo after reading that and becoming massivly confused.... betamax was just 1 compnaies version of videos.... that in theory was better than vhs... but just not popular because of the cost??? (doh)

Repeated their mistake a few years later with the Minidisc format (what the fook is that?! yer say :pff )

The there was all this "root-kit" spy-ware non-sense with their music CDs.

And nar the PS3 fiasco. It dunt play all old PS2 titles without some (currently unavailable) firmware updates. Well dodgy if you ask me.

Sony are the "Tommy Wright" of the big electrical companies. (N)

    They will converge

There's already players out (or perhaps due out) that can play both discs.

There's also discs that are coming out that have both technologies on different layers, so will play whichever format is compatible with the player.

Anyway, I can only speak for BluRay, but its awesome. Unbelievable difference from DVD quality.

I hate Sony for exactly that reason

Having bought plenty of their stuff in the past (TV, Camcorder, Video, Laptop, Home Cinema) I wouldn't EVER buy Sony again. Everything they do they have Sony proprietry stuff.

Plugs for a laptop - most comapnies have 2 pin leads that plug into the power pack (as well as steroes, etc.), Sony have three pin and they even change from one Sony model to the next!!

Tossers. Quality isn't what it used to be either.

    Won't ever buy Sony again.
