I'm going to get criticised for this but who gives a **** where the players are from. He talks like it matters that a players from Barnsley to me. I go to watch the youth games and I can tell you I don't care. I just want to see more Mason Holgates, John Stones, Jacob Butterfields James Brees Paul Digby's, Noble Lazarus ....... come through Only one of the above list are from the Barnsley area I believe.
Barnsley and it's surrounding area used to be a rich seam of footballing talent, not only for us but other clubs as well. Sadly, there's been too few of these in recent years making the grade at Oakwell. Hopefully, we can now begin to tap into this again (assuming it still exists) whilst at the same time being an attractive option to other young lads from further afield.
It matters to me, Phil. I'm not saying I'm arsed where they're from, but I feel more pride in the success of John Stones knowing he's a Barnsley lad than I will if Mason Holgate does well. Don't get me wrong, I think and hope Mason will do well, but being from tarn is extra special. Like Nicky Eaden, Antony Kay, Neil Austin, Dave Watson, Mick McCarthy, Tommy Taylor etc etc.
It matters to me Noble Lazarus put **** all effort in to improve (for various reasons). Holgate couldn't wait to run off. Digby plays like he thinks hes already made it and doesnt need to prove himself and Butterfield, no offence intended Whitey, wasn't our hardest working player. Now that doesn't mean they are lazy or anything but they don't put in that extra bit of effort that you generally get from a Barnsley fan or someone from the town. It's natural to try that little bit harder and that's why getting Barnsley lads could mean the difference. Some players are the exception to that rule obviously but in general it isn't too far off being wrong By the way you're a genius. The way you pretend George smith doesn't exist so you don't have to say 2 from Barnsley.
Amazed that it matters to some on here but oh well. To me it just matters that whilst they are playing they want to be here. Some might not like him because hes from that far away west Yorkshire but James Bree wants to be here and it makes me want him to do well. For Supertyke, I didn't put everyone with the ..... and not fully knowing Barnsley like you or many on here i'm not sure where the boundaries are. I was the same with Stones but I choose to put him out of the two even though it was mentioned hes from Thurlstone which is a Sheffield post code.
Give up yer barmpot, the whole of Barnsley has a Sheffield postcode. Ask John where he's from and he'll say 'Tarn'. As will James Bree actually.
i suspect you're in a minority hemsy. surely you understand why it's a good thing, to have homegrown players playing for us? not to say that they should be picked just because they're local. that won't happen. they'll have to be good enough. but given the choice of two players just as good as each other, you'd go for a homegrown boy, surely? but you also have to look at the wider picture, developing the community.
Honestly I went onto Wikipedia and looked through the S postcode, I haven't a clue about a lot of Barnsley Whitey, s72 to s75 apart from s74 are all Single Barnsley postcodes with s74 a split Barnsley/ Sheffield one.
Give over. Jim was at least 8% as talented, maybe even 9on a good day He wasn't lazy but like most players he didn't give that extra little bit of effort that pushes a player over the edge although in his case I think it was related to his position and kind of player he is too, there are very few truly hard working 110% players like him. Hourihane, Butterfield, McCourt. Similar attributes and percieved weaknesses. I wonder why that is. Coaching probably. Anyway, I think the reason proper Barnsley lads try harder is that they have grown up around the club. It's there in the background every time they go into tarn with their mum and dad, its on the back page of the local papers, the players go into their schools (rarely), its just a bit more familiar to them and so naturally means that bit more. There's also the fact of their friends and family being in the stands watching. I'd be trying harder if I'd just left school and 50 lads Iwent to school with sat watching, I'd be wanting to prove who good I was. I wouldn't have that same feeling if I played for Doncaster as I don't know any Donny fans. I reckon that's why it meant that much to Bobby Hassell and Martin Devaney too. They had children born in the area so it just naturally means a bit more to them. I think that the reason for that is that people who come from Barnsley
This. Genuine enthusiasm can't be faked and as well as pushing the player to try that bit harder it's infectious - both for players and fans. Seeing a player run down a ball that looks lost only to get there is massively encouraging to both fans and teammates. Some "foreign" players (e.g. Redders, Bobby, Steele) come to love the club and foster that sense of enthusiasm. However these players are few and far between because footballers tend to move clubs every year or 2. If you can bring through a group of lads who have that genuine, deep rooted passion for the club, the town and the fans then I think it can make a real difference. It cultivates a sense of identity and pride, the effect of which shouldn't be underestimated.
A Sheffield postcode like oakwell stadium is you mean? Give over, you aren't fooling anyone. You know more about our young players than anyone does so don't try telling me you don't know which are from Barnsley and which aren't and I'm pretty sure you know that smith and stones went to the same school in barnsley
It's a Barnsley postcode area. Like I live in a Pontefract area and that's what I write on a letter for example but postcodes WF
Perceived being the key word. Ask Huddersfield, Boro or Derby fans about him. They will all mention his engine, his graft, his workrate. And the fact he's quality at football.
