    Last minute

    or

book flights and then do searches for hotels - for my trip to US I booked flights thru travelocity and booked hotels direct on the hotels websites (same price but you get a better room as many give out the poorer rooms to people who book through 3rd party sites)

    My 2 pence worth

I've yet to find a good deal on expedia, travelocity/lastminute etc. I'm not saying they're no good but it depends on your circumsances.

If you're flexible when you can fly and don't have anything too specific in mind, they're OK but if you have specific dates prebooked off work and a specific location in mind, they're not so great. They make a fuss about being able to customise AND save but I've yet to find this - I've always been able to beat them when I've tried. However, their bundle deals are good if you can get time off at short notice (which I can't).

Good places I've found to start for a manual search are...
flybudget.com to find which airlines fly from your chosen UK airport to your chosen destination..
    venere or alpharooms for hotels
then resorthoppa to arrange airport transfers (often missing from the cheap deals leaving huge taxi fares on arrival)

    Top advice there

It's also worth looking directly at some of the budget airlines:
    Jet2 Thomsonfly EasyJet BMIBaby
