Very reminiscent of our 1-0 home win v entitlement fc in 2008 couple of chances at best grab a goal but my goodness organisation, shape, the ability to frustrate and of course watch them spurn chances. You need that luck and for all the ducks to be in a row for sure, a little sad for boro that in all likeliness they'll probably get turned over in 2nd leg, whereas we knew that was that over and out. The format for the league cup is bizarre, I remember 2 legs in the early rounds in the 80's west ham home and away, spurs and I think villa, then at round 3 straight knockout and then back to 2 legs at semi finals, remember getting knocked out by Walsall think 1984, again possibly 2 legs 1-1 away then lost 2-0 at home and they went all they way to the Semi final pushing Liverpool all the way. I just missed our famous run Swansea, Brighton, City, Liverpool but again the format different, single knockout this time early rounds the 2 legged QF onwards. Biggest achievement in the modern format is easily Bradford City only ever 4th tier side to reach a final.
It’s the last ever season of the semi final home and away ties though. The format changes again next season to a straight shoot out. I think I prefer the two legs myself. I do think this new format is to please the ‘big boys’ with their absolute relentless schedules……
I’ll be cheering on Middlesbrough. For all the stick VAR gets, if it was in place in this competition then Caicedo rightfully gets sent off in the first couple of minutes against Newcastle & it’d be a north east derby in the semis. Basically they shouldn’t be in the competition
There's also talk of scrapping replays in the FA Cup 3rd and 4th round after this season as the Champions League clubs will play 2 more games each (FA cup 5th round onwards replays have already been scrapped previously), and screw the lower/non league clubs for who a replay may provide funding to keep them going for years. Another nail in the coffin of the tradition and 'magic' of the cup, it absolutely stinks!
