BOYCOTT BARNSLEY WORLD (Petition to bring back a free solution)

I find it absolutely disgraceful that the club has decided to end the Oakwell 1575 service.

While I did have trouble receiving the signal in the house (even though I only live two miles from the ground/transmitter), I had no such trouble when in the car...I've been most of the way to Skegness before and still been able to receive the signal in the car. Therefore their argument about the number of people who can receive the signal is unfounded.

Secondly, what about all the people who are in the ground who like to take a radio with them and listen to the commentary while they watch? There are a least a few hundred people who do this every match day.

The main point is the fact that, where there was once the option of a free way to listen to a home game, on most occasions this now isn't going to be the case.

I'm not sure if the motivation for this is saving money or making money, I'd like to think it is money saving that is their priority. In this case, the best solution (though not necessarily ideal) would be to set up an Oakwell 1575 website and broadcast games from there, for free. Surely that's got to be cheaper than transmitting on Medium Wave and also gives the opportunity for reds all over the country and the world to listen to games.

This solution won't please t'old Arthur who listens to games on his portable wireless from the West Stand upper, but it's a smaller sacrifice than what the club are currently doing.

I propose a BOYCOTT of Barnsley World. If no-one is listening then they will have to do something.

Can I just point out that the club dont have any options regarding internet commentary

They are tied into a deal with premium tv along with all other league clubs and the only way they can provide internet commentary is via Barnsley world.

Radio is a different matter though - They have no compulsion to use anyone and are free to provide a commentart on air if they choose.

I dont know much of the story behind the demise of Oakwell AM but from the bits I have picked up I am fairly sure its not part of a conspiracy to force everyone to sign up to World. It might be a productive idea to write to the club with your views as I read a post somewhere implying that it may return - I suspect the more fans that express their disappointment the more likely it is to come back in some form.

Just boycotting Barnsley World isnt really going to make any difference
The petition idea has more chance of sucess

Leeds aren't. They've never used Premium TV. They have commentary on Yorkshire Radio (online and the old-fashioned way) and their online ticketing system works.

Someone at the club obviously saw the pound signs and signed a deal with PTV. I've got their admin login details and even their login stuff sometimes doesn't work!

Not that I'm a Leeds fan or advocating supporting them..

Leeds were in the Prem at the time the deal was signed

As it was for all the Football league clubs sides in the Premiership and Conference escaped.

Fair enough, but if that's the case, how long's the contract?

Surely we could opt out next time round? Or is it forced by the FL?

    Thats a very good question

    Quick internet search shows
Original deal was signed in 2000 and was renegotiated in 2004 for a further 3 years
I cant find anything after that but presumably the deal was renewed again

Hands may be a bit tied though as it seems that FLPTV is owned by the Football League

I am not impressed at all with Barnsley World and only sign up as its the only way to get commentary for games I cant get to - seriously considering cancelling - depending on what happens over the next few weeks
