Ohhhh, that's out. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/34244820 Remember him standing up to Holding in '76? No helmets then. These bloody lightweights these days..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=1&v=60GAhXvU90k
Aye and he used to field at short point too. Captained Yorkshire for four Championship winning seasons. Truly a Yorkshire legend. RIP Brian
Sad news indeed. He lived in Baildon seemingly, they are the team I play for. I was bought the attached print as a 'special' pressie about 5 years ago. Only two of 'em left now. Takes pride of place on my man-cave wall.
Strange how people you remember die in clusters. Ron Springett, Malcolm Graham and now Brian Close. RIP chaps
Remember watching that last session at Old Trafford as a 12 year old kid. It was truly brutal and Close hardly flinched. Unbelievable bravery. RIP Brian, a true Yorkshire legend.
top man will be missed, always remember the pictures of him with his shirt off, covered in bruises after facing yet another short pitched barrage, non of the padding, helmets and bits you get these days but the guy never flinched
Sacked as England captain for some transgression with a supporter. As the Evening Standard (I think) put it - under his captaincy, six wins and one draw, but no sporting defeats. The clowns at the MCC lost their best captain, a man who didn't believe in defeat. RIP Brian.
Now this is what I call a true sporting legend - not only did he captain England at cricket (being an all rounder he both batted and bowled) and played professional football, but could play golf to a very good standard (single figure handicap) BOTH right and left handed. Genius RIP Brian
That was Close's last test. He and Edrich were both dropped as openers after getting just 50 odd between them in 2 innings. It was Tony Grieg's fault for saying he'd make the West Indies grovel. I went to the next test at Headingley and it was us who grovelled. The West Indies were the best test side I've ever seen and were brilliant for most of the next 10 years and more.
Seemingly in the dressing room afterwards when the extent as to the bruising on Close's body was revealed Edrich laughed out loud and said 'All that for 2 not out!'
Very sad news. Many years ago, Brian Close presented awards and certificates to those of us who'd passed their exams at the Stocksbridge Steelworks. The ceremony was held at the old Victory Club. He was funny, charming, friendly and a perfect gentleman.
Good knock, Brian. I'm proud to be Yorkshire when I recall his presence in the cricketing world. As I remember, he lost the England captaincy after not allowing Yorkshire to be beaten in a match when stumps was nearing. He timewasted more than acceptable. Like, one over took eight minutes after he consulted and changed the field every ball. We got the draw and Brian was axed from England in the fallout. Unacceptable, maybe, but they wouldn't have done that to a Cowdrey, Dexter or Graveney. well lived, Brian, you were the leader.
