Pathetic penalty.

 

Read the interview. Howard says he's done it quite a few times and scored them but on this occasion the opposition gk coach was David Preece who obviously knows this so told the keeper to stand up if Howard takes one. Howard says he wasn't aware Preece was the coach, if he had known he wouldn't have done it.

 

Players take that risk, goalkeeping coaches do their homework so they are always trying to second guess you. If a penalty like this comes off it looks great but if it doesn't they look tits.

 

‘I took the penalty, he (Farman) caught it and said “Haha, you cheeky ‘few words’…I saw that on YouTube last night.” I then saw their goalkeeping coach, I didn’t know he was there, David Preece, who was at Barnsley and was at Portsmouth for a bit when I was there. He said they stayed in a hotel the night before, sat the goalkeeper down with YouTube, and showed him three penalties with me chipping it down the middle.

‘He (Preece) said: “If Brian takes a penalty tomorrow he’ll try and chip you down the middle.” If I knew Preecey was there, I wouldn’t have done it. I’d have smashed it in the corner! But I thought “I’ve taken seven or eight of them in my career, three in first team games. 99.9% of the time, the ‘keeper moves – down the middle is the safest option.” He’s read it, you know, that’s the way I play.’
