Said Cryne: "Brian Howard must be one of the best players in the Championship. You don't realise how good he is until you take the things he's done and put them on a disk and pull them together.

"People talk about Sheffield Unite'ds Michael Tonge being a £3 million or £4m player. What's Brian Howard worth? By comparison, he would be worth £10m."

Cryne added: "I think there is a tendency to look at Barnsley and say we can't have anything good because that's not where you go for good players.

"Brian Howard has been a truly outstanding player in the Championship for the last couple of years."

Cryne believes there is every chance of keeping the club's most prized asset.

"I think Brian likes being here," he said.

"He's a big fish in a small pool. He's not clamouring to leave, we're not getting his agent's clamour. We know that he's proud about being captain of Barnsley."

The Blades were the latest club linked with the 25-year-old and Everton's decision to release Lee Carsley to Birmingham could re-kindle interest on Merseyside.

Oakwell manager Simon Davey insists he wants to keep Howard but, as with every other player, he will sell if the price is right.

Barnsley are expected to bring in another central midfield player even though Anderson de Silva is part of Davey's long-term plans.

The talented Brazilian may miss the start of the season with a knee complaint.

He is still in Cadiz, Spain, where he is recovering from surgery.

Barnsley's Spaniard, Diego Leon, demonstrated last season he is at his most effective at the hub of the midfield and Davey is also expecting Jacob Butterfield to press for first-team football, with or without Howard.

Do you agree with Patrick Cryne's assessment? Is Brian Howard better than Michael Tonge? Post your comments below.

Seems like Cryne reads this board

All transfers must be based on the valuation of Tonge!

Sometimes you need to hold your tongue

    When Howard and his agent see this first thing that will happen is the agent will say;

"If you think he is worth 10 million then pay him the wage of a player worth that amount!"

Not necessarily; alternatively they might think, I'm pleased the club hold me in such a high regard.

    or alternatively

being in the game and used to this kind of stuff his agent will translate it as it was intended

"Brian is for sale, but don't think we will sell him cheap. I'm going to mention a ridiculous amount of money

so that when negotiationsbegin we start at the high end & you start at the low end. We then work our way down to a more realistic [but higher]

    figure somewhere in the middle"

Excellent from PC!! At least this means we wouldn't let him go on the cheap!

But I would be really happy if he signed a 2 year extension and ment he was here for 3 seasons!

That would reall show our intent, and with his skill, work rate and goals alone would see us safe. With some new strikers and more goals from midfield and a bit of luck, we could push for the top 6!!

If Lester signs and Bri stays I dont think we have no weaknesses in any position and will definitely finish higher next season if not top 6.

    You think

the signing of Jack Lester will transform the team from relegation strugglers to play-off candidates?

I think that's barmy and I hope our manager doesn't think the same.

Why on earth do you want us to sign Lester?!

I just can't see how he'd be the answer to any of our problems

    RE: You think

Davey's made some odd signings, to say the least, but if Lester was signed, that would have to top the lot.

As much stick as he gets, I'm sure (I hope at least) even Davey knows signing Lester would be a terrible decision
