just phoned virgin about my bill ( b/band, tv phone) £42, I rarely use the phone and get the max b/b thing but like the t.v. package anyway I was trying to get a reduction and being the mild mannered chilled little fecker that I am, I,m leaving at the end of may. so I would be grateful if anyone knows any good tinterweb deals and i'll get one of them there streaming box things t.i.a.

I'd disagree that Virgin are the best, when I was with them they throttled speeds if you used x amount in a very short period of time.

https://www.plus.net/home-broadband/fibre/ is a good bet. Remember to signup via Quidco or Topcashback too.

I got 100 Mb Broadband, Medium + TV + TiVo Box + Free calls anytime + international + 0800 numbers for £43 per month. That was after I gave them notice I was leaving, the call centre person I spoke to was rude and wouldn't budge but someone from retentions called me back later with that offer.
They had put the bill up to £52 on the old 30Mb service with ordinary TV and free calls.

    I also get 2 x 1GB + 300 mins talk, unlimited text sim cards for £5 each.

I get b/b at whatever speed it comes at, M+ tv, and the phone which I rarely use ( £2.45 last month and that's to the vets agency)not phoned me back but I hope they do, and you're bang on about the attitude of the staff it was a bird called Sandra and I could have easily slapped her with the way I was spoken to

To be fair, Virgin and cancel never let you cancel if they can help it. I cancelled a VM account years ago and I still get postal spam telling me about their service.

I think it's a trait of cancellation teams at all places to just turn nasty once they've lost you too. oh well, good luck with it.

Thing with Virgin is yes they do throttle your speed, but in a lot of cases even this throttled speed is faster than you'd get from anywhere else.

I chose not to go with them again when I moved as I got a really good deal with EE for their fibre service - not the 120mb I used to have (now 38mb) but I really don't notice the difference.

A lot of people still don't seem to understand though that with Virgin's cable service you get exactly what you pay for in terms of speed, whereas with others it's always 'up to' - I think most phone line based fibre services will give you 38mb no problem, but the next level up (normally 76mb) is a different story.

With the BT Wholesale FTTC services (upto 40/80Mbit) it just depends how far you are from the exchange and your local cab. When I was with VM it was so frustrating knowing I was being throttled (I understand throttling isn't as bad now as it was then). I think I was on 100Mbit when I left VM, and due to distance moved onto FTTC at about 40-60Mbps (I can't remember the exact figure). The thing is though, when you're talking speeds like that it doesn't really matter if you get 60mbit, 100mbit, 300mbpit, you'll barely notice and the biggest of downloads will be with you in seconds anyway.

Estimates (and they are only that) are available on http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome .

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot that can be improved with FTTC, but I just think the technology, or how it's implemented is better, even if that does involve BT.
